Heroic police operation in Akhnoor, leads to arrest of drug peddler with Heroin-like substance

JJ CORRESPONDENTĀ
Akhnoor, Nov 08: In a significant breakthrough against the growing drug menace in Jammu, police in Akhnoor successfully apprehended a notorious drug peddler during a routine checkpoint operation on the evening of 7th November. The swift and decisive action by the Akhnoor police has been hailed as a major step in curbing the circulation of narcotic substances in the region.
At approximately 6:30 PM, a police team from Police Station Akhnoor, led by Station House Officer (SHO) Inspector Tariq Ahmed, was conducting a routine patrolling and vehicle check at the strategically located Pannu Chowk Naka. The team flagged down a Swift car bearing registration number JK02CV 0048, which was traveling from Jourian towards Akhnoor. However, instead of complying with the police’s signal to stop, the driver of the vehicle attempted to flee the scene, evading the checkpoint.
Undeterred by the suspect’s attempt to escape, the police officers gave chase and successfully intercepted the car after a brief pursuit. The driver, later identified as Amardeep Singh, son of Amar Singh, resident of Bhadral Kallan in Akhnoor, was promptly detained for questioning.
Upon searching the vehicle, police discovered a substantial quantity of a heroin-like substance concealed in the dashboard compartment. The total weight of the recovered contraband amounted to 3.5 grams, confirming suspicions of illegal drug trafficking. When questioned, Amardeep Singh was unable to provide any credible explanation for the possession of the narcotic substance, further substantiating the police’s claims of illicit drug trade involvement.
The arrest of Amardeep Singh has sent shockwaves through the local community, underscoring the alarming rise in drug-related offenses in the region. Akhnoor has long been a hotspot for narcotic trafficking, with dealers often exploiting remote areas for the distribution of dangerous substances. Police believe that this arrest could be part of a larger drug network operating within Jammu and Kashmir, and further investigations are underway.
In light of the recovery, a case has been registered under FIR No. 197/2024, invoking sections 8/21/22/25 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The accused is currently in police custody and will face charges related to the illegal possession, transportation, and distribution of narcotic drugs.
The swift and professional handling of the operation has been widely praised by local authorities, with Akhnoor’s SHO lauded for his leadership and the courage displayed by the police team. This successful operation is seen as a testament to the commitment of Jammu’s law enforcement agencies in tackling the drug menace and protecting local communities from the devastating effects of substance abuse.
As the investigation continues, police are working to trace the origin and intended destination of the drugs, hoping to dismantle the larger syndicate behind this operation. Authorities have assured the public that they will continue to intensify efforts to fight drug trafficking in Jammu and Kashmir, ensuring the safety and well-being of citizens across the region.
The arrest serves as a stark reminder of the growing challenges posed by drug peddling, with law enforcement pledging to take all necessary steps to prevent the spread of illegal narcotics and protect the younger generation from falling victim to drug addiction.
