Rajouri, September 6: In a shocking incident, an 11-year-old Class 7 student was found hanging from a bunk bed under suspicious circumstances in the hostel of Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS), Gurdhan Bala, Rajouri, on Friday morning, prompting police to initiate a probe.
The deceased was identified as Sharafat Hussain, son of Mohd Riaz, a resident of village Jhalas under Rajouri police station.
According to Principal EMRS Hubi-Kandi, who also holds additional charge of EMRS Gurdhan Bala, Sharafat had reached school with his mother around 10:15 a.m.
“As examinations were to begin on Monday (September 8), Sharafat insisted on going home to attend a family function on Sunday. His mother, however, declined the request, citing she could not afford the travel fare,” the Principal said.
Teachers tried to mediate and advised Sharafat to go to his room, get ready, and return for the exams either on Sunday evening or early Monday morning. However, when he did not return for some time, a teacher went to check his room and found him hanging from the bunk bed.
The staff immediately brought him down. Teachers claimed the boy was still alive when discovered and was rushed to Associated Hospital GMC Rajouri. “Due to traffic congestion, he was later shifted on a motorcycle by a teacher, but doctors declared him brought dead,” Principal Ranjan Kumar informed.
Preliminary investigation points to suicide, but the police said the exact cause of death will only be known after the post-mortem and medical examination.
SHO Rajouri, who met with the grieving family, assured them that the matter is being thoroughly investigated and that “facts will be brought to light after inquiry from all possible angles.”
Police have registered a case, questioned some teachers, and the Principal has also filed a formal complaint.
The incident has sparked widespread concern over the vigilance of school authorities and the mental well-being of hostel students. Locals and parents have urged the school administration to pay greater attention to students’ safety and emotional health.
Meanwhile, the police have appealed to the public to cooperate with the investigation and assured them that justice will be served.
