Jammu Police and Forest Department foil Two Illegal Khair Wood smuggling attempts; over 23 quintals seized in Gharota Area

Jammu, May 31, 2025: In a significant joint operation,Jammu Police and the Forest Department have successfully foiled two separate attempts related to illegal smuggling and storage of Khair wood in the Gharota and Kalyar areas, falling under the jurisdiction of Police Station Kanachak.
Incident 1 – Gharota Area.
During routine NAKA checking and night patrolling on the intervening night of May 30-31, 2025, a Bolero pick-up vehicle (Registration No. JK14E-0210) was signalled to stop by the patrolling team. However, the driver tried to flee upon seeing the officials. A brief chase ensued, and the vehicle was later found abandoned on the roadside. The driver managed to escape under the cover of darkness.
Upon inspection, the vehicle was found to be illegally transporting 30 logs and twigs of Khair wood, weighing approximately 8 quintals, intended for unauthorized commercial gain. The vehicle and the seized material were taken into custody, and after completing all legal formalities, they will be handed over to the Forest Department for further action under the Forest Act. An official report has been registered at the police station, and efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend the absconding driver.
Incident-2 Kalyar Village
In a separate incident on the same night, during a joint patrolling operation, approximately 15 quintals of Khair wood logs and twigs were recovered from an open area in village Kalyar. The material was found illegally stored, presumably in preparation for unlawful transport. The recovered Khair wood was immediately handed over to the Forest Department on the spot after the completion of all legal formalities for further action under the Forest Act. A corresponding report has also been entered at the concerned police station.
