Jammu, Jun 10: As the monsoon season draws near, bringing with it the much-anticipated rains, the residents of Jammu brace for potential floods amidst growing concerns over the preparedness of the Flood Control Department. Despite clear signals of the impending monsoon, the department appears to be ill-prepared, with little to no preventive measures in place.
Inhabitants of flood-prone areas are particularly worried, as the annual deluge often brings significant disruption and damage to their lives and properties. Reports indicate that essential flood mitigation measures, such as cleaning and strengthening of drainage systems, reinforcing embankments, and creating effective emergency response plans, have not been adequately addressed.
Local community leaders and activists have voiced their frustration, citing the Flood Control Department’s negligence and inefficiency. “Every year we face the same issues, and yet no concrete steps are taken to ensure our safety. The department’s inaction is not just disappointing but dangerous,” said Rajesh Kumar, a resident of a frequently affected area.
The monsoon season, typically starting in June, is critical for Jammu, bringing much-needed relief from the summer heat but also posing significant flood risks. Effective flood management requires proactive planning and timely implementation of preventive measures. However, the apparent lack of readiness has left many questioning the department’s capabilities and commitment.
I tried to call the Chief Engineer, Flood Control Department Jammu Manoj Gupta but my call remain unattended and waited for return call from his end for a long time but remain vain. I wanted to know from him the reasons for the lack of preparation but remained unfulfilled. Internal sources suggest that bureaucratic delays and inadequate funding may be contributing to the department’s inefficacy. However, the urgency of the situation demands immediate action rather than excuses.
With the monsoon rains only weeks away, the residents of Jammu can only hope for an eleventh-hour effort to mitigate the risks. The lack of preparation not only puts lives at risk but also undermines the trust in local governance and its ability to protect its citizens.
As the rains approach, the eyes of the public and media will remain on the Flood Control Department, hoping for a swift and effective response to avert another season of preventable devastation.
