Senior NC leader urges immediate grant of statehood to J&K for peace, prosperity

Jammu, Feb 22:
In a heartfelt appeal to the Government of India, senior National Conference (NC) leader Mr. Subash Mehra has called for the immediate restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, stressing that this step is essential to bring much-needed relief to the people of the region.
In a press statement, Mr. Mehra emphasized the historical significance of Jammu and Kashmir’s integration with India. He reminded the nation that in 1947, the then ruler of Jammu and Kashmir, along with its people, made the historic decision to accede to India, becoming a part of the Indian Union. However, this merger was accompanied by several special provisions, which were included in the Indian Constitution to ensure the protection of the region’s unique identity and to address the challenges the people of Jammu and Kashmir had faced in the aftermath of the partition. These provisions, according to Mr. Mehra, were crucial to safeguard the interests of the people and maintain their dignity.
Mr. Mehra voiced strong concern over the revocation of the region’s special status in 2019, which led to the reorganization of Jammu and Kashmir into a Union Territory (UT) for the first time in history. “It is the first time in our history that a full-fledged state has been converted into a Union Territory, which has left the people feeling disempowered and marginalized,” he said. He further added that this unprecedented move has caused immense distress among the residents, leaving them with little autonomy and a sense of alienation.
Highlighting the adverse impact of the Union Territory status, Mr. Mehra pointed out the sharp rise in crime rates and the proliferation of drug smuggling, which have become significant concerns in the absence of statehood. “Without statehood, the administration has failed to curb the growing menace of crime, including drug trafficking, which is expanding rapidly and threatening the future of our youth,” he lamented. He also emphasized that unemployment in the region has skyrocketed, exacerbating the economic challenges faced by the local population.
In his statement, Mr. Mehra called on the Government of India to grant not just statehood but also restore the special status that Jammu and Kashmir once enjoyed, arguing that this is the only way to bring peace, stability, and prosperity to the region. He insisted that the people of Jammu and Kashmir deserve to feel secure and content, with their rights and aspirations being fully recognized and addressed. “Statehood and special status are crucial for the socio-economic and political well-being of the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” Mr. Mehra asserted.
This appeal for the restoration of statehood comes at a time when political and social tensions remain high in the region, with calls for greater autonomy and self-determination continuing to echo across various segments of society. Mr. Mehra’s plea reflects the ongoing concerns of the people, who are eager for a government that can address their needs and offer solutions to the mounting challenges they face.
As the debate over Jammu and Kashmir’s future status continues to unfold, the call for statehood remains a central issue for many, with leaders like Mr. Mehra urging the Government of India to take decisive steps towards granting the region the status it once held, thereby empowering its people and ensuring their rights and freedoms are respected.
