Jammu, Nov 12: In a remarkable display of swift police action and investigative acumen, Jammu Police has successfully solved a blind firing case and apprehended two notorious criminals involved in the crime. The operation, led by the diligent and determined Station House Officer (SHO) Inspector Deepak Pathania of Police Station Nowabad, also resulted in the seizure of a pistol, live cartridges, and a significant quantity of heroin, underscoring the police’s relentless efforts to combat both organized crime and drug trafficking in the region.
Firing incident- A crime that shook the community: The case began with a chilling incident on the night of November 2-3, 2024, when a 25-year-old man, Imran Khalil, was shot at by unknown assailants in the Nikki Tawi area. The victim, son of Shaista and Mohd. Khalil from Gujjar Nagar, Jammu, sustained serious injuries and was admitted to the Government Medical College (GMC) in critical condition. Shaista, the victim’s mother, immediately filed a written complaint at Police Station Nowabad, triggering a full-scale investigation.
A case (FIR No. 168/2024) under various sections, including attempted murder and unlawful possession of arms, was registered at Police Station Nowabad. The investigation was taken up by SHO Inspector Deepak Pathania, who immediately placed a team on high alert to solve the case.
Swift police action under SHO Deepak Pathania’s leadership: Despite the case being initially blind, meaning there were no immediate clues or suspects, Inspector Pathania’s leadership and expertise were pivotal in unraveling the mystery. The police launched a multifaceted investigation involving human and technical surveillance, CCTV analysis, and the activation of all sources for intelligence gathering.
Around 100 CCTV cameras in the vicinity were scrutinized, and after analyzing footage and gathering human intelligence, the police zeroed in on a group of suspects. About 20 individuals were questioned, leading to the identification of two suspects involved in the firing incident.
Crackdown on criminals and narcotics: On November 10, 2024, the police intensified their operations with the setup of a special naka (checkpoint) near T-Chowk on the 4th Tawi Bridge. The breakthrough came when a black-colored Creta car, bearing registration No. JK02BX-3022, was stopped for routine checking. Inside the vehicle were two individuals, who were later identified as Mohd. Hussain Khatana (alias Raju), a resident of Kokernag, Anantnag, currently residing in Ragoora, Jammu, and Mohd. Ramzan, a resident of Ragoora, Jammu.
Upon conducting a personal search, the police recovered approximately 18 grams of heroin-like substance from their possession. Consequently, a separate case (FIR No. 174/2024) under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act was registered against them. During sustained interrogation, both suspects confessed to their involvement in the shooting incident.
Weapon recovery and further revelations: In a major breakthrough, both suspects revealed crucial details about the firing incident. On their disclosures, the police recovered a pistol along with 16 live cartridges, which were used in the attack on the victim, Imran Khalil. Furthermore, the vehicle used in the crime was seized.
According to the police, the motive behind the shooting was a personal vendetta. It was revealed that Mohd. Hussain Khatana (alias Raju) had a dispute with a local drug smuggler from Nikki Tawi over an unsettled payment. On the day prior to the shooting, the drug smuggler had allegedly slapped Raju, which enraged him. Hussain Khatana wrongly believed that the victim, Imran Khalil, was acting as an informant to the drug smuggler. Infuriated by this assumption, he decided to take violent revenge.
Criminal background of the accused: The arrested criminals, particularly Mohd. Ramzan, have a history of criminal involvement. Ramzan is wanted in multiple criminal cases, including those related to bovine smuggling, narcotics trafficking, and even attempted murder. Notably, Ramzan had been evading arrest in a previous attempted murder case registered at Police Station Bagh-e-Bahu, Jammu.

His team, comprising PSI Darshan Singh (In-Charge PP Canal Road), PSI Aziz Tariq, and under the overall supervision of DySP Ashok Kumar, SP City North Brijesh Kumar Sharma, and SSP Jammu Joginder Singh, demonstrated exceptional coordination and resolve.
