Jammu, Sept 18: In a remarkable display of efficiency and dedication, the Jammu Police have successfully solved a double murder case within a swift 72 hours, bringing closure to a community shaken by the tragic deaths of a respected retired principal and his wife.
On the evening of September 14, 2024, an urgent alert was received by the In-charge of Police Post Pouni Chak regarding the suspicious deaths of Sanjay Chandel, a retired principal, and his wife, Veena Kumari, at their residence in Patta Bohri, under the jurisdiction of Police Station Domana. In response, an inquest proceeding was initiated under Section 194 of the BNSS. A team of local police, accompanied by forensic experts, promptly arrived at the scene. Following all legal protocols, the bodies were transported to the mortuary at GMC Jammu for post-mortem examinations.
Critical leads emerged from the victims’ family, complemented by CCTV footage that captured a suspect in proximity to the Chandel residence. This pivotal evidence allowed the inquest to be escalated to a murder investigation under Section 103 of the BNSS. Under the vigilant supervision of SP Rural Jammu, multiple police teams were formed to pursue the case.
Through a combination of local insights and technical intelligence, police identified the suspect as Deepak Singh, also known as Sonu, son of Kartar Singh, residing in Colonel Colony, Talab Tillo, Jammu. Within three days, he was apprehended in Jalandhar.
Deepak Singh had a longstanding relationship with the victims, frequently assisting them, particularly as Sanjay Chandel had health issues. However, an altercation on the day of the murders escalated tragically, resulting in the deaths of both individuals. Reports indicate that Deepak, an e-rickshaw owner facing financial difficulties, may have been motivated by monetary desperation.
Complicating matters, Deepak had traveled to Jalandhar on September 3, 2024, and ceased communication with his family, prompting them to file a missing person report on September 9. Additionally, on September 13, the family reported a suspicious transfer of money made by Deepak to a woman without their consent. During interrogation, Deepak confessed to selling his phone, further illustrating his financial distress.
The police’s rapid and effective response has garnered widespread acclaim from the local community, who praised their tireless efforts in resolving this disturbing case so swiftly. This successful operation underscores the commitment of Jammu Police to ensuring justice and maintaining safety in the community.
