Jammu, Aug 26: As anticipation mounts for the first assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, the BJP finds itself battling internal turmoil. The party’s initial candidate list for the first phase, released on Monday and subsequently withdrawn amidst fierce protests, has sparked outrage among dedicated party workers who accuse the leadership of prioritizing “other candidates” and ignoring those who have toiled for the party for decades.
Hundreds of BJP workers thronged the party headquarters in Jammu, expressing their anger and disappointment over the inclusion of some candidates, at the expense of loyal and hardworking BJP Karyakartas.
“We have dedicated our lives to building this party,” lamented a long-time BJP worker, “Yet, the leadership chooses to reward those who have contributed nothing to our growth.”
The initial list, comprising 44 names for 36 segments in the Jammu region and eight in the Kashmir Valley, was ultimately trimmed down to 16 candidates, reflecting the party’s attempt to appease the disgruntled workers.
However, the revised list has done little to quell the simmering discontent. The inclusion of individuals with questionable backgrounds, has further fuelled the anger, raising fears of a repeat of the Uttar Pradesh debacle, where the BJP lost a significant chunk of Lok Sabha seats due to a similar strategy of prioritizing “other” candidates.
Party workers have openly threatened mass resignations if their concerns are not addressed. They allege that the BJP has become a party of “goons” and “moneybags,” straying from its core values and abandoning its “party with a difference” image.
The BJP’s state president, Ravinder Raina, has acknowledged the workers’ grievances and promised to find a solution. “Every party worker is important to us,” he assured the protestors, urging them to maintain peace while the leadership addresses their concerns.
However, the damage has been done. The party’s hasty withdrawal of the initial list and the subsequent release of a revised list that still includes controversial figures have only deepened the distrust and disillusionment among loyal BJP workers.
The BJP faces a crucial test in Jammu and Kashmir. Its ability to navigate this internal crisis and address the concerns of its grassroots workers will determine its success in the upcoming assembly elections.
Jammu and Kashmir is scheduled to hold assembly elections in three phases, on September 18, 25, and October 1, 2024. The votes will be counted on October 4, 2024.
These elections mark a significant milestone, being the first since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019 and the subsequent bifurcation of the erstwhile state into the two union territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
