Jammu, Aug 20: With the Election Commission announcing assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the political landscape is abuzz with anticipation and uncertainty. As the BJP seeks to retain its hold on the region, rumors of a pre-poll alliance between the Congress and the National Conference (NC) are creating ripples, while the BJP grapples with internal discontent and a potential voter backlash.
The upcoming election, scheduled in three phases from September 18 to October 1, 2024, with results to be declared on October 4, marks the first assembly poll in Jammu and Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019 and the region’s transition to a Union Territory.
The BJP, riding high on the popularity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, swept the Jammu region in the recent Lok Sabha elections. However, this victory was largely attributed to Modi’s appeal and the party’s nationalistic agenda, with local BJP leaders failing to connect with the electorate.
Political analysts and sources within the BJP suggest that the party’s image has taken a hit in recent years, with growing dissatisfaction among the people of Jammu regarding the performance of the local leadership. The BJP faces an uphill battle to retain its dominance, with a potential alliance between the Congress and the NC posing a formidable challenge.

“The BJP needs to listen to its local leaders and give tickets to those who deserve it,” cautioned a senior party worker. “Ignoring the aspirations of the people and imposing candidates from outside will lead to disaster.”
