Jammu, May 24: Nestled in the picturesque Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir, a mere 82 kilometres from the bustling city of Udhampur, lies Latti – a serene and cool mountain haven. As temperatures soar to a scorching 43 degrees Celsius in Jammu, Latti offers a refreshing contrast with a pleasant 18 degrees, making it an ideal escape for travellers seeking respite from the summer heat.
This picturesque destination, adorned with lush Deodar forests and breath-taking waterfalls cascading from heights of up to 200 feet, has long remained unexplored due to a lack of infrastructure and official attention. However, under the leadership of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, the Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory (JKUT) administration has shifted its focus towards developing and promoting such hidden gems, ushering in a new era of tourism in the region.
Kasturi Lal Gupta, former Sarpanch of Latti, shared insights about the region’s unique appeal with Jammu Jottings during their visit. Highlighting the year-round pleasant weather, Gupta revealed that residents have never felt the need for fans, coolers, or refrigerators. He described the breath-taking sight of fresh hail blanketing the Kondi Top area, even at the peak of summer, emphasizing the area’s remarkably cool climate.
Latti and its neighbouring areas boast a plethora of captivating attractions for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike. Manju Top, Tadbag – an ancient site accessible through a natural rock gate, Shiv Galli, Sillar Lake, and a scenic trekking route from Latti Bazar to Manju Top promise unforgettable experiences. The region is also home to several awe-inspiring waterfalls, including those located on the main road, Dudu, Basantgarh, and Khaned.
Over the past four years, significant strides have been made in developing road connectivity to Latti, paving the way for a surge in tourism. New resorts, such as the Diamond Hill Hotel, have emerged, alongside a rise in homestays, offering authentic glimpses into the local culture and warm hospitality. The recent influx of tourists has also spurred entrepreneurial ventures like the tented accommodations in Dudu, providing unique experiences for travellers seeking an immersive cultural experience.
The tourism department has taken proactive steps to promote Latti, encouraging residents to register their homestays and offering financial assistance of rupees one lakh per room for development of Home Stays. On a recent visit the Director, Joint Director and Deputy Director Tourism revealed that plans are underway to inaugurate rafting activities at Sillar Lake on June 10 and develop additional facilities at Sira A and B, further bolstering Latti’s presence on the official tourist map.
Despite the positive developments, Latti still requires improved infrastructure and amenities to reach its full potential as a prime tourist destination. The construction of additional roads, including a shorter route from Chenani, is crucial to enhance accessibility. The completion of pending PMGSY projects will further improve connectivity within the region.
While the area boasts a strong focus on education, with a higher secondary school established in 1986, under the then Governor Jagmohan’s rule, the lack of a dedicated college hinders the academic aspirations of local students. Kasturi Lal Gupta appealed to the government to expedite the approval of a college in Latti, ensuring equal opportunities for students to excel. Additionally, the establishment of a Community Health Centre (CHC) is crucial to address the healthcare needs of residents and visitors.
