Admin orders immediate suspension of VPN services in J&K’s Rajouri to protect data on LS polls

Jammu, April 24: The administration on Wednesday ordered immediate suspension of Virtual Private Networks Services (VPNs) in the Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, two days after a government employee was shot dead by terrorists.
Few days back, security forces also recovered tiffin IEDs along with arms and ammunition in Thannamndi belt of the district.
As per the order issued by the JKAS, Additional District Magistrate, Rajouri, Rajeev Kumar Khajuria, stated that a communication has been received fron the office of Senior Superintendent of Police, Rajouri regarding unprecedented high usage of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) during past few days in different part of the district by score of suspicious internet users.
“Whereas, VPN transmits get encrypted and creates point to point tunnel, masks IP address and let’s sidestep website blocks and firewall on internet thus making data related to fortheoming Lok Sabha Elections and other sensitive data vulnerable to cyber attacks,” it read.
It further stated that as it has become imperative to take immediate preventive measures to protect, save all data and information related to ensuing Lok Sabha Elections and other sensitive vulnerable data from cyber attacks.
In view of it, the Additional District Magistrate, in exercisc of powers under Section 144 CrPC, it is order to suspend all kinds of (VPNs) in the mobile phones in district Rajouri till culmination of election process in the district.
Notably, Rajouri Anantnag-Rajouri Parliamentary Constituency will go to polls on May 7. UNI
