Five Mortar Shells Defused in the Last Four Days

Rajouri, June 8: Panic briefly gripped parts of Nowshera Sub-Division in Rajouri district after two unexploded mortar shells were discovered in a forested area near the LoC in Jhangar village.
Prompt action by the police and the Army ensured that the shells were safely defused, preventing any untoward incident.
According to reports, the prevailing heat wave has dried the grass and bushes in the forward forest areas of Jhangar, Makri, Saria, and adjoining villages. As a result, unexploded artillery and mortar shells, fired during past cross-border hostilities, are becoming visible at several isolated locations.
On Sunday, two mortar shells were found in the Jhangar area, following which the police and the Army were informed. As a precautionary measure, the sites were immediately cordoned off, and residents were advised to stay away from the suspicious objects.
Subsequently, a Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) and a specialist team from the Army’s Engineers Regiment reached the site. Following all necessary safety protocols, Army experts successfully defused both mortar shells at around 11 a.m.
Notably, on June 8, panic briefly gripped Jhangar and Makri villages when three unexploded mortar shells were discovered-two in Jhangar and one in Makri. The Bomb Disposal Squad of the Assam Rifles successfully defused all three shells.
With the latest operation, a total of five unexploded mortar shells have been safely defused in the area during the last four days.
