Crumbling to harassment couple opts for suicide, wife dies

Jammu, Jan 02: One victim among the couple who has attempted to suicide two days earlier due to allegedly harassed by the local police has succumbed early in the morning and his body was cremated by the family members as her husband is still under treatment in the Burn ward of Government Medical College Hospital Jammu.
On December 31, 2021 one person known as Dilawar Singh son of Pitamber Singh resident of Bye Pass Sidhara has attempted to suicide by sprinkling the oil on his body as he felt much harassed by the concerned police over the construction of his house under Prime Minister Awaz Yojna. As per his brother namely Sonu that the victim has got some financial assistance from the government for construction of his house but one Karan Singh who is also their relative and from same pedigree has started to raise objection. He not only objected personally but he too influenced the concerned police to intimidate the victim on one or other pretext.
Crumbling before the pressure and harassment unleashed by Karan Singh and police, the victim Dilawar Singh has compelled to take such a huge step to end his life as he could not able to bear more harassment. As per the family members, the victim has sprinkled the kerosene oil or some burnable liquid on him and lit the fire. As the fire has engulfed Dilawar Singh and his wife Purna Devi noticed it and she immediately pounced to extinguish the fire but she too got engulfed by the fire. She was severely burnt and today morning at 6 am near about as told by Sonu has succumbed to burn injuries and breathed her last. She was later cremated by her family but Dilwar Singh who is burnt more than 70% is still in Burn Ward for treatment and the police have recorded his statement in this concern.
When I talked to SI Shakeel Ahmed Incharge Police Post Sidhra, he told that there was some dispute among the family members over the land. He said that the matter was within family so the police has made very less interferences but this was more than one month earlier and till then the police do not have any information. He told that they have recorded the statement of victim Dilawar Singh and will initiate the legal proceedings. He told that police will register a case against Karan Singh if his involvement surfaced at any level in this case and no accused person will be spared.
As he was asked about the installation of CCTV camera beside by the victim house, the police officer told that the issue of camera has come to his notice but it was diffused at the same time but after that nothing was happened in this regard.
