Poonch Police Educates Public on New Criminal Laws, Warns Against Drug Offences

Poonch, Apr 17: In a significant move to combat drug abuse and enhance public understanding of newly enacted criminal laws, the District Police Poonch conducted a series of awareness programmes across the district today.
These initiatives were carried out under the guidance of Senior Superintendent of Police Poonch, Shri Shafket Hussain (JKPS). The programmes aimed to inform citizens about the evolving legal landscape while fostering community vigilance against drug-related offences.
During one such programme, SHO Police Station Surankote addressed the pressing issue of drug abuse. He elaborated on the grave consequences of drug consumption and trafficking, urging residents to remain alert and report any suspicious activities. He also reiterated that strict legal action will be taken against individuals involved in drug offences.
In another session, SHO Police Station Mandi focused on key changes introduced under the new criminal laws. Participants were briefed on citizen-centric provisions such as Zero FIR and E-FIR, the incorporation of community service as a form of punishment, and leniency for first-time offenders. The session also covered modernized legal approaches, including the recognition of organized and cyber crimes, the use of scientific methods for evidence collection, the admissibility of digital records, and stricter penalties for serious offences.
Speaking on the occasion, SSP Poonch Shri Shafket Hussain emphasized the crucial role of public awareness in the effective implementation of legal reforms. “These new laws are designed to modernize our criminal justice system by ensuring faster trials, stricter punishment for organized crimes, and greater protection for victims. Public understanding and cooperation are vital to realizing these objectives,” he stated.
The District Police reaffirmed their commitment to building a safer, drug-free Poonch and called for sustained community involvement. Officials also announced that similar awareness drives would be conducted across the region to engage all stakeholders, including students, youth groups, and the general public.
