Poonch District Hospital has become a safe haven for arrogant and overstayed doctors

Poonch, Nov 24: Why is the government failing to address the mismanagement of the District Poonch Hospital, leaving the poor patients to suffer endlessly? Why hasn’t the government taken decisive action against over-stayed and tainted doctors facing multiple allegations from patients and their families? Why has the government chosen a stance of criminal silence regarding the maltreatment of patients by these doctors? Why has the administration turned a deaf ear to the shouts and cries of the patients in Poonch? Who will hold accountable the underperforming and indifferent doctors occupying key positions in the district hospital? These are pressing questions that resonate deeply in the minds of the people. The Commissioner/Secretary of Health & Medical Education, Jammu & Kashmir must step forward and address these concerns with urgency and accountability.
The state of Poonch District Hospital is deteriorating with each passing day, as reports of poor performance by its staff frequently dominate headlines in print and electronic media. Despite being entrusted with the critical responsibility of healthcare, several doctors at this hospital fail to provide the attention and care patients deserve. Backed by connections or influence, some of these professionals appear more engrossed in their own arrogance than in their duty to serve the ailing.
The doctor-patient relationship in Poonch District Hospital has reached an abysmal low, making it the worst in the entire Jammu & Kashmir region. Such strained relations not only undermine the quality of healthcare but also erode trust, which is vital for any medical institution. Alarmingly, the behavior of certain doctors has become so unethical and disrespectful that it tarnishes the very dignity of their profession. Instances of doctors addressing elderly women dismissively as “Mai” showcase an appalling lack of respect and professionalism.
Addressing overstay and accountability: The issue of overstaying doctors adds to the hospital’s woes. Many of these doctors, having served in Poonch for extended periods without rotation, have become complacent. Their prolonged tenure in one place seems to have dulled their sense of responsibility and purpose. It is imperative that such doctors be transferred to far-flung areas where they can rediscover the essence of their calling-to serve humanity selflessly.
Furthermore, the introduction of a ‘Daily Performance Diary’ for all doctors in the health and medical education departments could instill a sense of accountability and focus. By documenting their daily activities and contributions, doctors would be encouraged to maintain high standards of patient care.
Non-clinical staff is also part of the problem: The malaise extends beyond the medical staff. Non-clinical employees, many of whom have overstayed their tenures, are equally complicit in hampering the hospital’s operations. Their inefficiency and lack of accountability contribute significantly to the hospital’s inability to fulfill its mission.
A call for immediate government action: The government must take urgent cognizance of the dire state of Poonch District Hospital. Comprehensive reforms, including staff rotations, stringent performance evaluations, and improved patient care protocols, are crucial to restore the hospital’s credibility. If immediate action is not taken, this hospital risks further decline, becoming a symbol of neglect and inefficiency-a far cry from the sanctuary of healing it is meant to be.
Poonch District Hospital has the potential to serve as a beacon of hope for the people of the region, but it can only do so if its staff, both medical and non-clinical, are held to the highest standards of professionalism and compassion. The government must act decisively to ensure that this vital institution lives up to its purpose.
