Rajouri, June 24: A tragic road accident occurred around 5:30 am on Tuesday near Chattiyar village (under the jurisdiction of Rajouri Police Station) on the Jammu-Poonch National Highway (NH 144A), resulting in the deaths of two women and injuries to nine others.
The mishap involved a tempo traveller (registration No. JK02AW-9030) traveling from Rajouri to Jammu, which met with an accident under circumstances that are yet to be fully ascertained.
Sources said the tempo traveller collided with a Tata Mobile (registration No. JK02CG-7011) coming from the Jammu side. The tempo driver reportedly swerved left to avoid a shooting boulder, resulting in the vehicle striking the roadside rock.
Local residents quickly reached the scene to rescue the injured and informed the police.
Of the nine injured — including a six-year-old boy — seven were admitted to Associated Hospital GMC Rajouri, while two were referred to the Army Hospital in Rajouri.
The deceased have been identified as Insa Fatma (26), daughter of Akhter Ali, resident of Kothra-Darhal, and Farzand Begam (50), wife of Mohd Iqbal from Fatehpur village.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Abhishek Sharma, IAS, visited the hospital to meet the injured. He also sought an action-taken report from the concerned departments and directed the implementation of long-term corrective measures to prevent such accidents in the future.
DC Rajouri visits injured, Orders Strict Action Against Road Safety Violations
Rajouri, June 24: Deputy Commissioner Rajouri, Abhishek Sharma, on Tuesday, visited the Associated Hospital GMC (AH GMC) Rajouri to inquire about the condition of those injured in the tragic road accident near Chingus on the Jammu–Rajouri–Poonch National Highway. The mishap claimed two lives and left seven others injured.
During his visit, the Deputy Commissioner interacted with the medical staff and directed them to provide prompt and quality medical care to the injured. He assured the families of the injured of every possible support from the district administration.
Later, the DC visited the accident site to assess the situation firsthand. He was accompanied by the Superintending Engineer of R&B, officers from the Traffic Police, the Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO), and representatives from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).
Taking serious note of the fatal mishap, the Deputy Commissioner sought an action-taken report from all concerned departments. He directed them to implement both immediate and long-term corrective measures to prevent such accidents in the future. Key directives included the strict enforcement of traffic rules, installation of road signage at vulnerable locations, regular monitoring of high-speed vehicles, and identification and rectification of accident-prone stretches.
“The safety of the people is our topmost priority. There will be zero tolerance for negligent driving and traffic violations,” the Deputy Commissioner stated, reiterating the administration’s commitment to enhancing road safety.
He also emphasized the need for coordinated efforts among enforcement agencies—including the police, transport department, and road construction authorities—to minimize accidents and protect lives.
The DC assured that robust measures would be put in place across the district to ensure safer roads and that any lapses would be met with stringent administrative action.
