Jammu, Mar 28: Declaring open the three-day Softball-Baseball Championship here, Nuzhat Gul, Secretary Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council on Thursday termed sports as best medium to eradicate drug menace from the society.
The Championship was declared open at Football Ground, GGM Science College here.
Gul speaking on the occasion said that sports and games are the best medium to eradicate drug menace from the society and help youth not to derail from the mainstream.
She highlighted the tremendous steps taken by the Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council and J&K Softball Association for development and promotion of Softball in particular and other recognized Sports in general as Softball is a recognised and regular event in the Olympic Games and Asian Games.
She said from a few years Softball sport is gaining momentum and achieving great heights in Jammu and Kashmir, besides making inroads in every nook and corner of the Union Territory.
“Involvement of youth in sports and games helps them not to fall prey to drugs and other social evils, otherwise, the drug menace is spreading alarmingly nowadays,” the Secretary stated.
Over 400 athletes from 14 districts of UT J&K are participating in Sub-Junior (Boys & Girls), Junior (Boys & Girls) and Senior (Men & Women) categories.
“The three-day Championship, which is being sponsored by J&K Sports Council, will conclude on March 30,” said an official adding that 14 matches in both the sections were played till now in Sub- Junior, Junior and Senior categories in both sections.
Baljinder Pal Singh, Divisional Sports Officer Jammu Vikas Mangotra, in-charge GGM Science College were also present on the occasion.
The Championship is being organized by the J&K Softball Association. UNI
