From zero to a National Model: The Inspiring Rise of ‘Jute Wali Anjali’

Rags to Riches!

Lucknow/Jammu, Mar 24: In the heart of Lucknow’s Bhulbhulpur-Rasoolpur Sadat region, a remarkable story of determination, innovation, and empowerment is unfolding. Popularly known as “Jute Wali Anjali,” Anjali with her efforts and calculated strategy has emerged as a shining example of grassroots entrepreneurship, transforming a modest beginning into a industrial success with the support of the Government of India’s flagship initiatives.
What began in 2010 with just one machine and a single woman worker has today evolved into the Lucknow Multi Products Cluster, one of the largest Common Facility Centres developed under the SFURTI (Scheme of Fund for Regeneration of Traditional Industries) by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME). Reflecting on her journey, Anjali admires, “SFURTI gave me the opportunity to touch the sky.”
The cluster has received vital support from institutions such as the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) and the National Jute Board, enabling the seamless integration of traditional jute craftsmanship with modern technology, advanced infrastructure, and effective market access. In 2021, the project was granted financial assistance of approximately ?4.47 crore under the SFURTI scheme, marking a turning point in its expansion into a large-scale enterprise.
It is pertinent to note that the Lucknow Multi Products Cluster has established strong linkages across multiple states in the country, emerging as a vital hub of inter-state trade and collaboration. The procurement of raw materials has effectively created a bridge between Uttar Pradesh and other regions, fostering economic integration and mutual growth. Additionally, the increasing demand for its products from various states has further strengthened these connections, positioning the cluster as a key contributor to expanding market networks and promoting sustainable industrial development across state boundaries. Today, the cluster boasts an impressive network of around 740 machines and provides livelihood opportunities to hundreds of women artisans. Equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for stitching, jute product manufacturing, and allied activities, the centre stands as a model of efficiency and sustainability. Notably, it operates on solar energy, reinforcing its commitment to environmentally responsible production. The product range has also diversified significantly-from eco-friendly jute bags and decorative items to innovative jute jewellery, which is rapidly gaining popularity in the market for its unique appeal and sustainable nature.
Beyond being a success story of an individual entrepreneur, this initiative highlights the transformative power of well-implemented government schemes at the grassroots level. Programs like SFURTI are revitalizing traditional industries, enhancing productivity, and generating sustainable employment opportunities in rural areas. For women, in particular, it has become a powerful vehicle of empowerment, enabling financial independence and strengthening their role in both family and society.
The journey of “Jute Wali Anjali” stands as a powerful testament to what can be achieved through vision, perseverance, and institutional support. It reflects the spirit of a self-reliant India, showcasing how small beginnings, when nurtured with the right opportunities, can grow into extraordinary success stories that inspire a nation.
