Jammu, Nov 16: A Special Police Officer, four women among nine killed and three injured in separate road accidents across Jammu region on Wednesday.
Police here said that four women among eight people died when the passenger cab they were travelling in skidded off the road and plunged into a 300-feet gorge in Kishtwar district this evening.
The cab was on its way to Marwah when the accident occurred, they said adding, “the mishap occurred on Alasyar-Tatapani road in Marwah. The vehicle plunged into a Renie Nallah resulting into on spot death of eight people including four women.
The teams from civil and police administration along with Army personnel and locals reached the spot and carried out the rescue operation.
However, police confirmed the spot death of eight persons.
The deceased were identified as Mohammad Amin of Chanjer, Marwah, Umer Gani (Driver) of Nawapachi, Mohammad Irfan of Qaderna, Marwah, Afaq Ahmed of Thachna, Dachhan, Safoora Bano of Anjer, Marwah, Muzamula Bano of Yaurallo Marwah, Asia Bano of Marwah and one unidentified female.
This was the third major accident on Doda-Kishtwar roads in the last one week in which 16 people including Superintending Engineer, Executive Engineer, Assistant Executive Engineers (AEE) and driver were killed.
On November 8, four young boys drowned after their car skidded off the road and plunged into Chenab in Doda.
Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha tweeted, “anguished to learn about the loss of lives in a road accident in Kishtwar. My deepest condolences to bereaved families. Directed district administration to provide all necessary assistance.”
Union Minister Dr Jitendfra Singh tweeted, “spoke to DC #Kishtwar after receiving the news of an unfortunate Tata Sumo road accident in Marwah area. Eight persons have died on the spot, rescue operations in progress to recover other persons. All possible assistance being provided, further help as needed would also be made available. My sincere condolences to bereaved families.”
Former Chief Minister and Chairman of Democratic Azad Party Ghulam Nabi Azad also expressed condolences to the bereaved families of eight persons who lost their lives in a fatal accident in Alasyar road at Marwah.
In a condolence message, Azad said “May almighty give enough strength and courage to the bereaved families to bear such irreparable loss. I once again expect that authorities will ensure enough safety measures as occurrences of such accidents are witnessed every alternate day. Smooth traffic movement on such hilly terrain needs immediate attention. I am sure that adequate compensation and immediate relief will be provided to the next kin of those who got killed in this devastating accident.”
However, earlier in the morning, a day after his engagement, a special police officer (SPO) died when hit by a rashly driven truck in Bagh-e-Bahu area in Jammu.
Police said that a rashly driven truck hit the cop at a checkpoint near Bagh-e-Bahu resulting in his death on the spot.
The deceased was identified as Rajat Choudhary of Bishnah, Jammu.
The cop got engaged two days back and was expected to get married in February next year.
“The truck also hit another parked truck with force and one person sustained injuries and he was rushed to the hospital,” said police.
The vehicle has been seized and the driver is also arrested, they said.
Meanwhile two persons sustained injuries when nearly half a dozen vehicles collided each other inside Nashri-Chenani Tunnel in the jurisdiction of Batote Police Station of Ramban district.
“The injured have been evacuated and shifted to the hospital,” they said.
