J&K jolted by 5.7 magnitude earthquake

Srinagar, Feb 5: An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale hit Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday morning, officials said.
J&K Meteorological Department said the tremors were felt at around 9:46 am in Kashmir and its epicenter was at a depth of 181 kilo meters in the Afghanistan-Tajikistan Border region.
There was no report of any casualty or major damage to property.
However, the spire of Kashmir’s famous shrine of Sheikh-ul- Alam housed at Charar-e-Sharief in central Kashmir’s Budgam district got tilted due to the earthquake, a shrine board member said. The officials immediately started repair work of the damaged spire.
The strong tremors in Kashmir caused panic among the people who rushed out of their homes. UNI
