Chandigarh, Sep 30: In an indication of a thaw between Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and Navjot Singh Sidhu, party leaders said an agreement between the two was reached at the meeting held on Thursday evening.
The meeting that started around 3 p.m., lasted for over two hours.
Party leaders coming out of the meeting said all issues were resolved.
“All issues has been resolved, Congress is united under Charanjit Singh Channi and Navjot Singh Sidhu,” a party leader said after the meeting was over.
No official comments were made by the party on their decision.
Sidhu on Thursday tweeted and openly opposed the promotion of Iqbal Preet Singh Sahota, who has been given the additional charge of the director general of Punjab police, tweeting about it shortly after the meeting started.
“DGP IPS Sahota was head of SIT investigating Beadbi case under Badal Govt, he wrongfully indicted two Sikh youth for sacrilege & gave clean chit to Badals. In 2018, I along with INC Ministers, then PCC President and present Home Minister assured them of our support in fight for Justice,” he said.
Sidhu had tendered his resignation as the Punjab Congress chief on Tuesday, but it was not accepted by the party high command. The state unit was asked to resolve the differences.
On Wednesday, Channi had said that he would talk to Sidhu and resolve the differences.
Sidhu on Thursday morning tweeted that he was called by Channi for a meet, and he would “reciprocate” by attending.
The meeting was held at the Punjab Bhawan in Chandigarh.
Former Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh, who returned to Chandigarh on Thursday evening after a 3-day visit to Delhi, meanwhile slammed Sidhu for interfering in the state government’s work.
“Sidhu’s job is to run the party, Channi’s job is to run the government. I have been PCC president, and chief minister, the decision has to be taken by Channi not Sidhu,” said, adding that deciding appointments was not the job of the party chief.
Singh on Thursday also put to rest speculations of him joining the BJP and also said he would not stay in the Congress any longer. He did not reveal his future course of action, and asked people to wait for it.
Punjab has been in a political turmoil since Singh resigned as the chief minister on September 18, after being asked by the party high command amid an ongoing tussle with Sidhu.
Singh soon after launched an attack at Sidhu, and opposed his nomination as Punjab chief minister and eventually Channi was picked as his successor. UNI
