Jammu, Sep 29: Police on Wednesday said that they have seized 600-kg poppy straw from a truck loaded with apple boxes in Hiranagar area of Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Kathua, Ramesh Kotwal said that approximately 600 Kgs of Poppy Straw, commonly known as Bhukki was seized from the vehicle during a checkpoint at Hiranagar area.
The SSP said that on Tuesday evening, police team led by Inspector Anil Kumar Sharma, Station House Officer, Police Station, Hiranagar under the supervision of SDPO Border Sachit Mahajan, during naka checking duty noticed one suspicious truck on way from Jammu towards Kathua was signaled to stop for checking.
“Sensing danger, the driver broke the police signal and escaped from the spot. During the chase, the vehicle was stopped at Rasana Morh but the driver managed to flee away,” he said.
On checking it was found that the vehicle was laden with 1069 boxes of apples out of which 61 boxes were filled with Poppy Straw narcotics weighing approximately 600 kilograms of Poppy Straw, he said adding, “thereafter recovered narcotics alongwith truck was seized and manhunt was launched to trace the accused.”
A case was registered under the relevant section of NDPS Act and investigation started, said the top cop.
