Rajouri, November 4: In a tragic road accident that occurred around 8 a.m. on Tuesday in the Thandikassi area near Rajouri town, 28 passengers, including 26 school and college students, were injured when a canter bus (registration number JK02AM 8074) overturned, allegedly due to speeding.
Eyewitnesses claimed that the bus was being driven not by its main driver but by his assistant. One of the passengers, Mohammad Shabir, stated that the assistant driver was playing loud music and driving the vehicle at an extremely high speed.
“While trying to give way to an oncoming vehicle, he reportedly lost control, causing the bus to overturn on the road,” he added.
The accident resulted in serious injuries to several students. One student’s arm was crushed under the bus tyre and was severed, while another suffered severe arm injuries.
Among the 28 injured, 26 are residents of Thandikassi village. The wounded include 13 girls and 13 boys between the ages of 7 and 18 years, while two adults – Mohammad Arif (30) and Nageena Akhter (23) – were also injured.
Two critically injured students were airlifted to GMC Hospital Jammu, and have been identified as Aliza Kousar (15), daughter of Dil Mohammad, and Saqib (11), son of Mohammad Javed, both residents of Thandikassi.
Upon receiving information, Deputy Commissioner Rajouri Abhishek Sharma (IAS) and SSP Gaurav Sikarwar (IPS), along with police teams, rushed to the spot and initiated rescue operations. With the help of residents, all the injured were shifted to the Associated Hospital in GMC Rajouri.
DC Rajouri immediately contacted the Divisional Commissioner Jammu, after which a helicopter was arranged to airlift the two critically injured students to Jammu for timely medical attention.
Dr. Mushtaq Ahmed, Medical Superintendent AHGMC Rajouri, informed that the condition of the remaining injured is stable and all are under treatment at AHGMC Rajouri.
Meanwhile, Principal GMC Rajouri, Prof. (Dr.) A. K. Bhatia, who was attending an official meeting in Jammu, rushed to GMC Jammu to enquire about the health of the two students. He requested Principal GMC Jammu, Prof. (Dr.) Ashutosh Gupta, and the Medical Superintendent to provide the best possible treatment and arrange blood if required. He also assured 24×7 assistance to the families of the injured students in Jammu.
