Serving fireman among accused; ACB probes wider network

SRINAGAR, JUNE 12: In a major breakthrough in the ongoing investigation into alleged irregularities in the Fireman and Fireman Driver recruitment process, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested four individuals, including a serving Fireman, for their alleged involvement in the examination paper leak case linked to the 2020 recruitment exercise.
The arrests were made in connection with FIR Number 01/2025 registered at Police Station ACB Central Srinagar.
According to officials, three of the arrested persons are beneficiary candidates who allegedly secured appointments through unfair means, while the fourth accused is a serving Fireman.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Shameem Ahmad Dar of Tujan, Pulwama; Mohammad Abdul Qayoom alias Waseem of Hangah, Handwara; Feroz Ahmad Yatoo of Hayatpora, Chadoora, Budgam; and Farooq Ahmad Wani of Wathoo, Shopian, who is currently serving in the Fire & Emergency Services Department.
The case relates to the recruitment examination conducted on September 20, 2020, for the posts of Fireman and Fireman Driver. Allegations of a paper leak and manipulation in the selection process had triggered a detailed inquiry, ultimately leading to the registration of a criminal case by the ACB.
Officials said the accused are being questioned to uncover the larger network behind the alleged leak and identify others who may have played a role in facilitating the malpractice or benefited from it.
Investigators are examining documentary evidence, communication records and other material collected during the probe.
The arrests mark a significant step in the ACB’s efforts to expose the alleged scam, which has raised serious concerns over transparency and fairness in public recruitment.
Authorities believe the interrogation of the accused could provide crucial leads regarding the planning, execution and beneficiaries of the alleged leak.
Officials maintained that the investigation is progressing on multiple fronts and that further arrests cannot be ruled out.
The ACB has reiterated its commitment to conducting a thorough and impartial probe to ensure accountability and bring all those involved to justice.
