Kathua, September 10, 2026: Jammu and Kashmir Police in Kathua District, under the overall supervision of SSP Kathua Mohita Sharma IPS, has achieved a significant breakthrough in its sustained campaign against narcotics by exposing the backward linkages of an inter State drug trafficking network and arresting two alleged suppliers in connection with FIR No. 89/2026 registered at Police Station Billawar.
The latest operation has pushed the total recovery of heroin like narcotic substance in the case to 515 grams, striking a major blow to a network allegedly responsible for feeding narcotics into the region.
The case was initially registered under Sections 8/21/22/29 of the NDPS Act, with 435 grams of heroin like substance already recovered during the earlier stages of the investigation. With the latest arrests and recoveries, investigators have succeeded in tracing two more alleged backward links of the network and widening the scope of the probe beyond the immediate area.
The operation was carried out by a dedicated team of Police Station Billawar led by SHO Billawar Zaheer, under the supervision of the SP Operations Upper Kathua and SDPO Billawar. The team worked on intelligence inputs and undertook searches not only in Kathua District and neighbouring areas but also in Punjab, indicating the inter State nature of the suspected narcotics chain.
Police used a combination of technical assistance and human intelligence to track the suspected backward links. After sustained efforts, the team apprehended Abinash Kumar S/O Dev Raj R/O Nangal, Tehsil Nagri, District Kathua, from whose possession 53 grams of heroin like substance was recovered.
During questioning, police reportedly obtained information leading them to another alleged supplier, Jagmohan Singh S/O Narinder Singh R/O Taran Taar Road, Gali No. 04, Near Tarlok Jhanj Ghar, Amritsar.
The police team subsequently traced and apprehended Jagmohan Singh and recovered another 27 grams of heroin like substance from his possession.
With these two recoveries, the total quantity of heroin like substance seized in FIR No. 89/2026 has now reached 515 grams, comprising the earlier recovery of 435 grams and the latest recoveries of 53 grams and 27 grams.
SSP Mohita Sharma’s Crackdown Targets the Supply Chain
The latest success is being viewed as an important part of SSP Kathua Mohita Sharma IPS’s sustained drive against narcotics trafficking, particularly networks that operate across district and State boundaries.
Rather than limiting the investigation to street level peddlers, Kathua Police has focused on identifying the suppliers and backward linkages that feed the local distribution chain. The latest arrests indicate an effort to trace the network to its source and disrupt the movement of narcotics before they reach consumers.
The involvement of locations in both Kathua and Punjab also highlights the wider reach of the investigation and the need for coordination when suspected drug networks operate across State borders.
SHO Zaheer’s Field Operation Expands Investigation
The role of SHO Billawar Zaheer has been particularly significant in taking the investigation forward at the field level.
The police team under his leadership conducted a discreet operation after developing intelligence regarding the suspected backward links. Searches were conducted at several locations across Kathua District, adjoining areas and Punjab.
The operation relied on technical inputs backed by human intelligence, allowing investigators to move beyond the initial accused and identify individuals allegedly supplying narcotics into the network.
Police officials said the investigation remains focused on establishing the full chain of supply and identifying other persons who may be connected with the case.
The latest action also reinforces the importance of specialised investigation in narcotics cases, where the arrest of one peddler can often provide leads to suppliers operating elsewhere.
Two Arrests, One Wider Network
The recovery of 80 grams in the latest operation may appear as a separate seizure, but its importance lies in the information that police say has emerged from the investigation.
The arrest of Abinash Kumar reportedly led investigators to Jagmohan Singh, providing a direct link between the Kathua based network and an accused located in Amritsar.
The investigation is now expected to focus on establishing the movement of the narcotics, the identities of other suppliers and distributors, the financial transactions involved and the possible extent of the network’s operations.
Both accused have been arrested as backward linkages in FIR No. 89/2026 and are now part of the ongoing legal proceedings under the NDPS Act.
The case has therefore moved beyond a routine drug seizure and into a wider effort to dismantle the supply chain behind narcotics trafficking.
Kathua Police Maintains Zero Tolerance
The operation comes as Kathua Police continues its stated zero tolerance policy against drug peddling under the Nasha Mukt Jammu Kashmir Abhiyan.
Police have reiterated that sustained action against narcotics is essential to protect young people and prevent the spread of drug abuse in the region. The focus remains on identifying not only those selling drugs at the local level but also the persons supplying and financing the trade.
The latest case demonstrates how investigations into narcotics offences can extend beyond local boundaries when police pursue the backward linkages of a network.
With 515 grams of heroin like substance now recovered in the case and two alleged backward link suppliers arrested, investigators are expected to continue examining the network to establish whether more persons, locations and financial channels are involved.
The action under the supervision of SSP Kathua Mohita Sharma IPS, led on the ground by SHO Billawar Zaheer with supervision from the SP Operations Upper Kathua and SDPO Billawar, represents a significant step in Kathua Police’s continuing campaign to disrupt inter State narcotics trafficking and prevent the drug supply chain from reaching the youth of the region.
