Rajouri, August 14: In the last 24 hours, heavy rainfall measuring 108 mm has wreaked havoc in Rajouri district, severely disrupting normal life.
Over a dozen houses have been damaged, while one laborer lost his life in Thanamandi tehsil and two others were injured after being buried under debris in Kalakote tehsil.
” In the Khadgala area, the collapse of a house left 7-year-old Waqar Ali and a 2-year-old girl Zainab Firdaus injured. They were given first aid at Kalakote and later referred to GMC Rajouri, where both are undergoing treatment. However, Waqar Ali’s condition remains critical,” said BMO Kalalkot Dr Iqbal Malik.
According to the district administration, continuous torrential rains have damaged more than a dozen houses across the district and caused damage to around 100 electricity poles.
These figures are preliminary and could rise further. Residents from areas where houses have been damaged have been shifted to safer locations. Due to the damage to electric poles, the power supply has been snapped in many hilly areas of Rajouri since last night, causing significant hardship to locals.
Meanwhile, in Rajouri city’s Kheora area, the water level in a local stream rose sharply, creating flash-flood-like conditions. Water entered several shops and houses, causing heavy losses.
In another incident, panic gripped the area when a man grazing cattle crossed the Sukhtoi river and got stranded on the other side due to sudden flood-like conditions. Upon receiving the news, the administration swung into action, and with the help of SDRF, police, and locals, rescued the man safely after a gruelling two-hour operation.
Following the sudden surge in the Sukhtoi river, the administration also shifted families living in makeshift huts along the riverbank to safer places to prevent any untoward incident.
Due to the continuous heavy rains, road connectivity has been disrupted in several areas, including Kotranka-Khawas, Khawas-Dhaleri, Samote-Targai, Kotranka-Shahpur, Manjakote-Patrara, Thannamandi-DKG, and Darhal-Dodaj.
