LS adjourned amid protests over GST hike
New Delhi, July 19: (UNI) Opposition MPs staged a protest against the Goods and Services Tax hike and demanded a roll back in Lok Sabha on Tuesday, forcing Speaker Om Birla to adjourn the House till 2 pm shortly after it met.
Opposition lawmakers were on their feet soon after the House met. They trooped near the Speaker’s podium with placards demanding roll back in the hikes in GST. They also raised slogans against the hike, and the Government.
Speaker Birla tried to continue the question house even as the ruckus continued. As MPs continued to show placards and raise slogans, the Speaker said an important question related to farmers was being raised.
Birla said bringing placards in the House is against the rules.
“There is an important question on MSP… You talk about farmers outside the House, but not inside… You talk about price rise outside, but don’t wish to discuss it in the House…” Birla said.
He said he allowed discussion on price rise in the last session.
As sloganeering continued, Birla adjourned the House till 2 pm.
