Jammu, Oct 03: In a historic triumph for democracy, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Jammu & Kashmir, Pandurang Kondbarao Pole IAS, alongside his dedicated team, has orchestrated a remarkably peaceful assembly election across 90 constituencies spanning two provinces and 20 districts. This monumental achievement stands as a testament to their unwavering commitment and meticulous planning, marking a significant moment in the region’s political landscape.
For the first time in a decade, voters in Jammu & Kashmir had the opportunity to exercise their democratic rights in assembly elections, a process that was long overdue. Initially scheduled for 2020 under the erstwhile rules, these elections were delayed due to the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019. With the assembly tenure traditionally set at six years, the elections were already four years late by the time they occurred, making the smooth execution all the more commendable. But after abrogation of Article 370 and reducing the state status to UT, the tenure of assembly elections was too reduced to 5 years and by that the election were due in 2019, hence the elections are late by five years.
The success of this electoral exercise is reflected in the impressive voter turnout of 63.88 percent-a notable increase compared to the recent Lok Sabha elections. This rise in participation underscores the public’s renewed faith in the electoral process, a sentiment carefully nurtured by the diligent efforts of Pole and his team.
The challenges were formidable, especially given the sensitive and hyper-sensitive nature of many polling booths in Jammu & Kashmir.
