Saffron Cultivation in Ladakh Records First Bloom in 30 Days

Leh, November 1: Ladakh’s experimental saffron cultivation project has recorded its first bloom in just 30 days, significantly earlier than the usual two-month period.
Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena inspected the saffron field, developed on 4,000 square metres of restored barren land under Project Him Sarovar. Around 800 kg of premium Iranian saffron corms, numbering nearly 90,000, were planted on October 1.
The field is currently witnessing 20 to 25 flowers daily, with a peak of 72 flowers recorded in a single morning. Nearly 22 grams of saffron have been collected in four days.
Describing the achievement as a promising breakthrough, the LG said the pilot project could open new avenues for commercial saffron cultivation, employment and income generation in Ladakh.
The initiative aims to explore the suitability of saffron cultivation in Ladakh’s high-altitude climate and strengthen the local economy. The LG also appreciated the Agriculture Department and field staff for their efforts in making the project successful.
