IGP Jammu Zone Tejinder Singh leads a foot patrol through City North on his first days in the new assignment, personally reviewing security arrangements, law and order and public safety concerns.

Joined by DIG Jammu-Samba-Kathua Range, SSP Jammu and SP North Jammu, the IGP interacts directly with residents and shopkeepers and directs field personnel to maintain heightened vigilance and regular patrolling.

A 2008-batch IPS officer with earlier experience as SSP Jammu, DIG Poonch-Rajouri and IG CID, Tejinder Singh now brings a field-oriented policing approach to the Jammu Zone, with visibility and rapid response placed at the centre of the mandate.

Jammu, September 02, 2026: Inspector General of Police, Jammu Zone, Tejinder Singh, has signalled an emphatic field-oriented approach to policing by personally leading a foot patrol through the City North area, accompanied by the DIG Jammu-Samba-Kathua Range, SSP Jammu and SP North Jammu, to take stock of security arrangements, law and order and the concerns of residents and the business community.

The high-level patrol, coming days after Tejinder Singh assumed charge as the IGP Jammu Zone, was not confined to an office review. The senior police leadership took policing directly to the streets, interacting with residents and shopkeepers and assessing security and public safety requirements on the ground.

The move assumes significance as Tejinder Singh has taken over the Jammu Zone at a time when the force is seeking to strengthen visible policing, improve public confidence and ensure faster response to emerging security challenges.

During the patrol, the senior officers reviewed the prevailing security arrangements and took stock of the law and order situation in the City North area. They also interacted with members of the public and local shopkeepers to understand their concerns and assess whether the existing policing arrangements were adequately addressing the requirements of the area.

The officers directed the field staff to maintain heightened vigilance, ensure regular patrolling and remain responsive to the safety and security needs of residents.

Close coordination among field units was also emphasised so that any emerging situation could be responded to promptly.

Tejinder Singh’s Field-First Message

The IGP’s decision to personally lead the foot patrol sends a clear operational message: policing is not to remain confined to police stations and offices, but must remain visible where people actually live, work and conduct their daily affairs.

For Jammu’s residents, the sight of senior officers walking through neighbourhoods and engaging directly with the public can also serve as an important confidence-building measure, particularly in sensitive urban areas where quick communication between police and the community can be critical.

The latest exercise reflects the principle of proactive, visible and people-centric policing, with the leadership examining security arrangements firsthand rather than relying exclusively on routine reports from subordinate formations.

Tejinder Singh is not new to Jammu’s policing landscape. He has earlier served as SSP Jammu and as DIG Poonch-Rajouri Range, besides serving as IG CID J&K before his appointment as IGP Jammu Zone. His return to a key field command therefore brings experience from both district policing and intelligence assignments.

The Government’s recent police reshuffle transferred Tejinder Singh, a 2008-batch IPS officer, from IG CID to IGP Jammu Zone, where he succeeded Bhim Sen Tuti. He assumed charge of the new assignment on August 31, 2026.

A Record of Strong Enforcement

Tejinder Singh also brings with him a record of handling challenging policing assignments.

During his earlier tenure as SSP Jammu, he publicly spoke of the police department’s aggressive campaign against the drug menace and the arrest of drug peddlers, stressing the need for sustained action against narcotics as a social evil.

His posting as IG CID J&K immediately before taking over the Jammu Zone also adds an intelligence and investigation dimension to his policing experience. The combination of field policing, range-level command and CID responsibilities could prove significant as Jammu Police works to strengthen both preventive policing and intelligence-led response.

The present foot patrol, therefore, is being watched as an early indication of the operational style the new IGP intends to bring to the Jammu Zone.

Senior Officers Review Ground Situation

The presence of the DIG Jammu-Samba-Kathua Range, SSP Jammu and SP North Jammu alongside the IGP also underlines the importance attached to coordinated policing.

Rather than treating city security as the responsibility of individual police stations alone, the exercise brought different levels of the command structure together on the ground.

The senior officers assessed the prevailing security arrangements and directed personnel to remain alert and responsive. They also stressed the importance of coordination between field formations so that information is shared quickly and decisions can be taken without delay.

Such coordination is particularly important in urban policing, where incidents can escalate quickly and where police response depends heavily on communication between patrol units, police stations, senior officers and other field formations.

The interaction with shopkeepers and residents also provided the police leadership an opportunity to hear concerns that may not always reach senior officers through formal channels.

For local residents, visible engagement by senior police officers can make policing more accessible and can encourage greater cooperation with law enforcement.

The exercise also reinforces the message that maintaining public safety is not limited to responding to offences after they occur. Regular patrolling, public interaction, early identification of potential trouble spots and maintaining a visible police presence are equally important components of preventive policing.

Tejinder Singh’s foot patrol comes immediately after his assumption of charge and therefore carries an added institutional significance.

The Jammu Zone has a broad and complex policing responsibility, covering urban Jammu as well as several districts where security, crime prevention, narcotics, traffic and law-and-order issues require sustained attention. The new IGP’s early emphasis on physical presence and direct public interaction suggests that field-level visibility is likely to remain an important part of his approach.

For Jammu residents, the real measure of this approach will be whether such visible policing translates into faster response, stronger preventive action, improved coordination and greater public confidence over the coming months.
