Mughal Road Temporarily Closed Amid Fresh Snowfall and Inclement Weather

Poonch, May 31: Vehicular traffic on the strategic Mughal Road has been temporarily suspended following a spell of fresh snowfall and continuous rainfall in the Peer Ki Gali region, officials confirmed on Saturday.
In a statement to Greater Kashmir, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Surankote, Mr Farooq Khan, stated: “Owing to fresh snowfall at Peer Ki Gali and a significant increase in rainfall, the Mughal Road has been temporarily closed for traffic until further notice.”
The decision, officials say, has been taken as a precautionary measure in light of the deteriorating weather conditions and the resultant risk to commuter safety. Authorities noted that slippery road surfaces, poor visibility, and the possibility of landslides have rendered the route unsuitable for safe travel.
The Mughal Road, which links the districts of Poonch and Rajouri in Jammu with Shopian in South Kashmir, serves as a vital alternative to the heavily used Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. However, due to its high-altitude terrain, it remains vulnerable to weather-induced closures, particularly during the late autumn, winter, and early summer seasons.
Traffic personnel and civil administration teams have been deployed to monitor the evolving situation. The road will only be reopened once weather conditions stabilise and comprehensive safety assessments are carried out by the relevant departments.
Travellers have been strongly advised to defer their plans involving the Mughal Road and are urged to remain updated through official advisories. Authorities have appealed to the public to avoid relying on unverified sources of information.
