J&K Students Plead for Extension of PMSSS Deadline Amid Documentation Woes and National Tensions

Jammu, May 19:- As the clock ticks toward the final day to apply for the Prime Minister’s Special Scholarship Scheme (PMSSS), students across Jammu & Kashmir are growing increasingly anxious. May 20 is the official deadline for submission, but many Class 12 outgoing students say they have not had enough time or resources to complete the application process-largely due to unavoidable circumstances and systemic challenges.
In a heartfelt appeal, the students have requested the central government to extend the application deadline to May 31. If May 31 turns out to be a holiday, they propose the next working day be considered the new final date. They fear that if not addressed immediately, hundreds of deserving students may lose an academic year-a setback that could impact their future prospects.
Students appeal to the Prime Minister for intervention: The students have called upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and rescue students from losing their opportunity for higher education. They emphasize that the issue is not one of negligence on their part but the result of broader national and administrative hurdles.
Tense national situation also contributed to delay: Adding to their difficulty is the current strained situation between India and Pakistan, following recent developments post-surgical strike. Over the past week, six crucial days were lost as students and families were focused on safety and national security concerns.
“This was no ordinary delay,” said one parent. “Both countries were at loggerheads (locked horns), and people were under stress. It was a national tragedy (trasadi) and such scenarios must be considered when setting hard deadlines for national schemes.”
The Income Certificate Bottleneck: A major bottleneck in the PMSSS application process is the requirement for an income certificate, a mandatory document that many students were unable to obtain in time. For the common citizen, acquiring this document involves complex procedures, long waiting times, and frequent visits to government offices-especially challenging for rural and economically weaker families.
Several students reported that they missed the PMSSS deadline solely because they could not secure the income certificate in time.
Redundant Bureaucracy Adds to Student Misery: Another significant shortcoming in the system is that different government schemes require separate income certificates. For instance, an income certificate issued for the EWS (Economically Weaker Sections) category is often not accepted for the PMSSS or other academic purposes.
This bureaucratic redundancy not only harasses applicants, but also creates chaos in public offices, as candidates are forced to apply multiple times for essentially the same document.
Students demand master Income Certificate: The student community strongly urges the government to issue clear guidelines for a unified or “Master Income Certificate”, which can be used across all government schemes and departments-be it scholarships, reservations, or financial aid programs. This streamlining would reduce delays, ease administrative workload, and allow students to focus on education rather than paperwork.
Conclusion: A Call for Compassionate Governance: The PMSSS is a lifeline for students from J&K, offering them an opportunity to study in reputed institutions across India. Missing out due to administrative and geopolitical challenges would be a grave injustice to the deserving.
Students and families urge the government to show compassion and understanding in this critical moment. They are not just asking for a deadline extension-they are appealing for their future.
“We have dreams, but dreams need time and support. Please give us that chance,” said a hopeful student from Doda.
