Jammu, Feb 09:
In a resolute move to address the rising concerns of gangster activities, robberies, and thefts in Jammu, Shiv Kumar Sharma-IPS, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Jammu-Samba-Kathua (JSK) Range, chaired a high-level meeting at the District Police Lines (DPL), Jammu. The meeting was convened to review crime control strategies and formulate an action plan to take swift and stern measures against criminal elements that threaten the peaceful environment of Jammu.
The meeting was attended by senior police officials, including SSP Jammu Joginder Singh-JKPS, SP North, SP South, SP HQ, SP Rural, SP Operations, Dy. SPs, SDPOs, and Dy. SP DSB, among others. During the session, officers provided crucial intelligence on the modus operandi of criminal gangs, their financial backers, weapons, vehicles, shelters, and communication networks.
A Zero Tolerance Approach to Criminal Activities: DIG Sharma, in his review, emphasized the urgent need to adopt a zero-tolerance approach to combat gangsters, drug traffickers, thieves, and other anti-social elements operating in the region. He issued clear instructions to the officers to maintain detailed records of such offenders, ensuring continuous surveillance over their activities. The DIG also stressed the importance of dismantling the criminals’ financial networks and seizing the assets accumulated through illegal means, including extortion, land-grabbing, and property dealing. “The fight against criminal gangs and their support system must be relentless. We must target not only the criminals themselves but also those who aid, abet, or provide shelter to them,” DIG Sharma remarked, underlining the need for strict legal action against the families and associates who harbor such elements.
Crackdown on Drug Trade and Social Media Glorification: In line with ongoing efforts to combat narcotics abuse, DIG Sharma called for intensified operations against drug peddlers and the dismantling of their illicit trade networks. He urged officers to take a mission-oriented approach to eliminate the menace of drugs from the region.
In addition to law enforcement, the meeting also addressed the alarming trend of glorification of criminals and gangsters on social media platforms. The DIG instructed officers to take strict action against individuals promoting or idolizing criminal gangs through online content or media outlets, including TV interviews and portal interviews. He called upon the media fraternity to expose these criminal networks and their harmful influence on the youth.
“Social media platforms should not become tools for criminal glorification. We must work together with the media to expose these criminals who are spoiling our youth,” said DIG Sharma.
Operations and Surveillance: Strengthening Jammu’s Safety Net: DIG Sharma discussed several ongoing initiatives, including Operation Cleanup for gangsters, Operation Sanjeevani for drug control, Operation Pathshala for youth education, and Operation Kamdhenu, among others. He urged all officers to follow the guidelines issued by RPHQ Jammu to maximize the impact of these operations.
To further tighten security, the DIG instructed officers to strengthen existing nakas (checkpoints) across their jurisdictions and identify areas requiring additional surveillance. He also emphasized the need for close coordination with intelligence agencies such as the Army, Para-Military Forces, and other Central agencies to ensure a seamless flow of intelligence and reinforce operational efforts.
Legal Action Against Illegal Modifications and Weapon Possession: In his directive, DIG Sharma also outlined a crackdown on illegal vehicle modifications, including vehicles with tinted windows, criminal-looking alterations, or vehicles without number plates. Additionally, he called for strict legal action against individuals possessing illegal weapons or involved in land grabbing activities.
Building Stronger Community Partnerships: The meeting concluded with a firm message of community involvement and public cooperation. DIG Sharma reiterated that Jammu Police is committed to ensuring the safety and security of every citizen. He urged society, media, NGOs, volunteers, and former police personnel to unite in the fight against criminals and gangsters, stressing that only through collective efforts can Jammu be truly safeguarded.
“Let’s come together as a community, including our media and civil society, to eradicate the criminal elements from Jammu. The Jammu and Kashmir Police are fully committed to your safety, and we will not allow any element to disturb the peace,” stated DIG Sharma.
He also assured the public that rumor mongers and fake news spreaders will be dealt with sternly, sending a clear message that Jammu will remain a stronghold of peace, law, and order.
Through this powerful meeting, DIG Sharma reiterated his unwavering commitment to justice and security for the people of Jammu, marking a significant step toward a safer and more peaceful future for the region.
