Jammu, Oct 14: As the dust settles on the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, the BJP, having emerged as the second-largest party with 29 seats, finds itself facing an unexpected hurdle: choosing a Leader of Opposition (LoP). The party’s success in the Hindu-majority Jammu region contrasts sharply with its failure to secure a single seat in the Muslim-dominated Kashmir Valley, resulting in a divided mandate and a National Conference-Congress coalition government.
While the BJP has assured a swift decision on the LoP, internal bickering and differing opinions on the ideal candidate have delayed the announcement. The party is grappling with a crucial dilemma: should they prioritize experience or reward loyalty?
Two names have emerged as frontrunners for the LoP post: Devender Singh Rana and Sham Lal Sharma. Rana, a former NC leader who joined the BJP in 2021, brings valuable experience from his time in the previous NC government. Sham Lal Sharma, a former Congress minister who joined the BJP in 2014, possesses extensive knowledge and experience in handling Jammu’s political affairs.
Both Rana and Sharma are considered particularly well-suited to tackle the politically sensitive Pir Panchal and Chenab Valley regions, where the BJP’s performance fell short of expectations. Despite implementing developmental projects and introducing Pahari reservations in the Pir Panchal range, the BJP failed to secure any seats in the area. Similarly, their promises of development in the Chenab Valley did not translate into a complete sweep, as they had anticipated. Rana and Sharma’s experience and understanding of these regions could prove invaluable in navigating the political landscape and addressing the concerns of the local population.
Both Rana and Sharma are seen as strong contenders who can effectively represent the BJP and raise the concerns of the Jammu region in the Assembly. However, their relatively recent entry into the party has raised concerns among long-time BJP workers who feel that their loyalty and contributions are being overlooked.
The BJP leadership is also considering other options, including veteran BJP leaders Sunil Sharma (MLA Padder Nagseni), Rajiv Jasrotia, Shakti Parihar, and DK Manyal, alongside Devender Rana. The party must carefully weigh the pros and cons of each candidate, balancing experience, loyalty, and the potential impact on party cohesion.
J&K BJP chief Ravinder Raina has confirmed that the party will announce the LoP soon. Union minister Prahlad Joshi and party national general secretary Tarun Chugh have been appointed as central observers and are expected to visit Jammu in the coming days to meet with elected MLAs and finalize the decision.
The BJP’s performance in the Assembly elections, while successful in Jammu, has exposed its limited reach in the Kashmir Valley, where it failed to win any seats. The party secured the highest vote share (25.64%), followed by the NC (23.43%) and the Congress (11.97%). The PDP garnered 8.87% of the votes, while AAP MLA from Doda Mehraj Malik emerged as a surprise performer.
The BJP, with 29 MLAs, is poised to play a crucial role as the opposition, holding the NC-Congress coalition government accountable. The selection of the LoP will be a key decision for the party, as this individual will be responsible for articulating the BJP’s stance on crucial issues and challenging the government’s policies.
