Jammu, Nov 01: The Senior Superintendent of Police, Kathua district, Ramesh Chander Kotwal, JKPS, has taken the challenge to make the entire district crime-free in every aspect, including drug-peddling, bovine smuggling, and anti-national activities.
After joining as SSP Kathua, Mr. Kotwal immediately held meetings of all the police officers of district and asked them to work with zeal and dedication. He has worked out an action plan to combat the multi-faceted crime going on in the district and has started working on his plan to contain the crime. He worked day and night and drew up the entire district Kathua police department to work for the society.
He has remained instrumental in bringing down the crime rate in Kathua district due to his skill of remaining vigilant and creating several “Chakravhue” to keep vigil on the locality. Some of the criminals have mended their ways, and some have gone underground, but the common people are feeling very comfortable at present. The SSP has opted for people-friendly policing and sent some drug-addicted youth to rehabilitation centres for reform.
The Kathua police have registered 50 FIRs under NDPS and in this connection, 70 drug-peddlers have been arrested within a period of 10 months, i.e., in the year 2022. Besides, the Kathua police have seized various types of drugs, including heroine 450 grams, worth Rs 2,250,000 as per the international market. Such a type of tough attitude by the police towards drug-peddlers has brought a tremendous change in the mindset of peddlers. Besides, Kathua police seized 724 bottles of Corex syrup; 28300 capsules; 17 kilograms of Chakras/Ganja; 200 injections; 700 kilograms of Bhukki (poppy husk); and 50 grams of opium. This is a surgical strike on drug-peddlers and their mentors.
In the case of bovine smuggling, 102 FIRs have been registered in different police stations in Kathua district in a period of 10 months. Eighty-seven bovine-smugglers have been apprehended, 830 cows or oxen have been rescued, and 95 vehicles have been seized. This was a big achievement regarding bovine smuggling in the Kathua district.
To maintain peace, law, and order in the district, the Kathua police have booked six criminals under the PSA. This act has sent a strong message to other criminals to shun crime and become law-abiding citizens.
The SSP Kotwal has attempted to reform the youth who have become addicted to drugs. He sent seven drug-addicted people, including one girl, to a private rehabilitation centre, DDAC, for their rehabilitation, that too, free of cost. They were sent by CSR through Kathua police under the directions of SSP Ramesh Chander Kotwal.
The Kathua district is a very typical district as it is the gateway of J&K and its borders are surrounded by Pakistan, which is a different country. Whereas, the Indian state of Punjab is also sharing the border of Kathua district and the police has to check interstate crime also. The Kathua policer have gunned down one drone this year and recovered seven sticky bombs and seven UBGLs. It has arrested a terrorist, Zakir Hussian Bhat, from Malhar, and recovered four sticky bombs and three IEDs.
The Kathua police have to work with the BSF and army as most of the border of the district is shared by Pakistan. There are possibilities of infiltration and to quell the infiltration, the Kathua police have to remain very vigilant and also work with the BSF and Army.
A prominent social activist in Kathua, Bhushan Sharma, said that since Mr. Kotwal joined as SSP Kathua, the crime rate has come down significantly. He said that Mr. Kotwal is working round the clock and his people-friendly behaviour has been liked by everyone, besides he is available for everyone without any reservation. He further added that a sense of fearlessness among the people of Kathua district has been seen.
