In a democratic government people are considered to be the only force to lead the country where everyone can live in a free and peaceful atmosphere. The Constitution of democratic countries is placed above all. The constitution begins with the words written on the front page, “We the people of India”. The democratic government according to the concept of the constitution is described as “Government by the people, of the people and for the people”. The concept and soul of the constitution beyond any doubt is a true representation of Indian culture, ethos and values. Every article, section, sub-section and other provisions of our Constitution substantiate the words, “Government by the people, of the people and for the people. No government can be formed without the participation of the people in the prescribed electoral process. As per the constitution, to form a government a party or political group must have the mandate of the people to form the government. As such the supremacy of the people is above all and has the power to change the rulers just by pressing a button of the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM). But after that, after pressing the button of EVM, after declaration of election results and after the government is formed and a particular political group comes to power? Nothing, nowhere are the “We the people of India”, and to some extent “Government by the people, of the people and for the people” look like a few words written on the paper. Because, once a political group comes into power and forms a government of its own, the people have no role to play till the next elections, to be held, barring some exceptions, after a gap of five years. Where are “We the people of India” in between two elections, a gap of five years? Nowhere, they don’t have any say except protest, that too is crushed or dealt with hard hand or in many cases money plays its role.
