NGO, a non government organization working for the betterment of the downtrodden, oppressed, ignored, poor, helpless, needy and jobless people of the society. There are others which are working specifically for the promotion of sports, art & culture. They are devoted to providing security for women and children, while some for the distressed class of the society. Many NGOs are working for improvement in the agriculture sector. Similarly several NGOs are working to create and provide employment opportunities to the women. Many of these organizations were headed and run by Christian Missionaries through Nun’s or Fathers. Now during the last few years the organizations run by the Christian Missionaries have either been asked to close their activities or have been banned and disbanded. Many among these organizations run by Christian Missionaries were also giving services in various fields of Jammu and Kashmir. These were mostly engaged in providing educational and health related services to the people, especially to the rural population. As such many educational institutes, including primary and high schools have been established during the last about hundred years in Jammu also. All these are known for their discipline and quality education. This is evident from the fact that the people belonging to the upper class of the society including VIP’s and businessmen give preference to these institutes for the education of their children. Similarly these Christian Missionaries have also established several health centers including reputed hospitals in Jammu. Most of them have been established in rural areas. These health centers are providing the best health service irrespective of class, caste, creed, colour and religion. As far as the organizations related to education and health have not been touched so far by the government but other organizations run by Christian Missionaries are being made to surrender and close their activities. Among these are the organizations devoted to helping downtrodden, oppressed, ignored, poor, helpless, needy and jobless women. For this purpose these organizations with the coordination of the Social Welfare department and NABARD have been providing training in various types of skill development activities, so that they can establish their own income generating units near their home or in the home. During training the trainees were provided a stipend and after the completion of the training all trainees were provided required equipment and financial loans through government banks. But now as alleged by several local women, that after these organizations being occupied by the locals with the support of the government have stopped stipend and other help to the trainees. Even the number of trainees is also being fabricated to siphon the grants which earlier were reaching in the hands of deserving.
