Customers Outraged as J&K Bank’s Lone ATM in Karan Bagh Remains Defunct; Locals Question Administrative Apathy

RC Sharma Chanakya

Jammu, Nov 30: Why is the administrative machinery of J&K Bank so inefficient that its ATMs function erratically, causing undue hardship to the public? Who bears responsibility for malfunctioning ATMs within municipal limits, where citizens expect uninterrupted services? Why is the MD/CEO failing to address such a basic yet essential component of customer service?

It is deeply concerning that the higher authorities of J&K Bank remain silent spectators, watching the persistent ATM failures without taking corrective measures. Who will hold them accountable and compel them to rectify these shortcomings? How can the bank justify deducting ATM service charges when it cannot even ensure the availability of a functional ATM for its own customers?

These are pressing and legitimate questions that the administration of J&K Bank must answer. The bank’s leadership must come forward in the public domain, provide clarity, and assure the people that their concerns are not being ignored. The general public deserves transparency, accountability, and a reliable banking experience—not excuses and malfunctioning services.

Strong resentment is simmering among residents of Karan Bagh, Gadi Garh and adjoining areas after the only ATM of J&K Bank’s Karan Bagh Branch on RS Pura Road remained out of service throughout the day, leaving customers deeply frustrated. The machine, which serves as the sole cash withdrawal point for the entire locality, displayed a conspicuous board reading “Out of Service,” drawing sharp criticism from the public over the bank’s lackadaisical approach.

The Jammu & Kashmir Bank Limited, regarded as the premier financial institution of the Union Territory, is the primary channel through which government salaries, pensions, and various welfare benefits are routed. People are heavily dependent on the bank for all essential transactions. Yet, customers argue that despite this reliance, J&K Bank has failed to ensure even the most basic and uninterrupted ATM facilities.

A customer who had come to withdraw cash expressed his anguish, stating,
The government compels us to use J&K Bank for every financial need. But the bank administration does not appear serious about addressing customer issues. I urgently needed money, yet I am returning empty-handed despite having funds in my account. This is unacceptable.

Residents alleged that this is not an isolated instance. They pointed out that several ATMs across the area suffer from severely worn-out or misprinted keyboards, making the digits nearly invisible. As a result, many users inadvertently enter incorrect PIN numbers or wrong withdrawal amounts, risking failed transactions. Customers say that they are often forced to “guess” the numbers on the keypad—an absurd situation in today’s digital era.

Adding to their concerns, customers highlighted that while the bank is swift in deducting ATM charges from their accounts, it consistently fails to provide reliable ATM services in return. This contradiction, they argue, raises serious questions about the bank’s priorities and accountability.

Residents demanded immediate and firm action from the bank’s top administration, stating that the persistent apathy reflects poorly on the institution’s leadership. The public believes that if the concerned authorities cannot ensure uninterrupted and efficient ATM services—an elementary expectation—they should make way for an administration capable of delivering dependable and modern banking facilities.

The incident has once again brought to the forefront the pressing need for transparent communication, prompt rectification of technical faults, and a customer-centric approach from J&K Bank’s leadership. People expect not excuses, but solutions—so that access to their own money does not become a daily struggle.
