Brig Harcharan Singh Honoured by Raksha Mantri for Exemplary Service to Disabled Soldiers and Veer Naris

Jammu, Oct 2: In a prestigious National Conclave organized by the Department of Ex-Servicemen Welfare (DESW) in New Delhi, Brigadier Harcharan Singh was felicitated by the Raksha Mantri Mr Rajnath Singh for his outstanding contributions towards the welfare of disabled soldiers and Veer Naris. The impressive event was graced by senior military and civil dignitaries, including Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan and Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi, underscoring the importance of the occasion.
Brigadier Harcharan Singh currently serves as the Director, North Zone of the War Wounded Foundation (WWF)-a nationally recognized NGO committed to the welfare of India’s disabled soldiers. Under his visionary leadership, the Foundation has implemented a series of impactful initiatives aimed at empowering those who have borne the scars of battle in the service of the nation.
One of his key efforts includes the selection and support of disabled soldiers from northern states, who were provided modified scooters, auto-rickshaws, and wheelchairs.
These mobility aids have enabled many to start their own small-scale enterprises, facilitating their journey from dependence to self-reliance. Through strategic coordination with the Indian Army, Sainik Welfare Departments, government agencies, and civil society, Brig Singh has successfully disseminated information on available welfare schemes. These efforts have been reinforced through regular rallies, seminars, and public outreach programs.
Brigadier Singh’s work through the War Wounded Foundation is guided by a powerful mission: to turn disabilities into abilities, by not just providing material resources but also offering critical psychological and emotional support to disabled veterans. His work is not only service-oriented but transformational in nature-restoring dignity, purpose, and independence to those who have sacrificed for the country.
Beyond this, Brigadier Harcharan Singh has spearheaded Project NAMAN, a unique initiative that builds lasting bonds between civil society and Veer Naris-the widows of martyred soldiers. Under the aegis of National Corruption Control and Human Welfare Organization (NCCHWO), a respected NGO, families of Veer Naris are adopted by concerned citizens, who offer mentorship, emotional support, and guidance for the children. These adoptions are not symbolic but active, with regular visits, assessments of family needs, and real-time problem-solving.
NCCHWO also undertakes numerous social welfare projects targeting underprivileged sections of society. A major thrust is placed on instilling patriotic and nationalistic values in the youth, encouraging their physical participation in national events, community service, and programs that reconnect them with India’s cultural and ethical foundations.
In his acceptance speech, Brigadier Harcharan Singh expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Indian Army, Sainik Welfare Department, NGOs, and Civil Society for their unwavering support. He emphasized the urgent need to involve the youth of the nation in initiatives that promote Indian value systems, ethos, and traditions, while nurturing a strong sense of national pride and responsibility.
Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh, while felicitating Brigadier Singh and other distinguished ex-servicemen, lauded their continued commitment to the nation beyond their uniformed service. He said, “The Nation will forever remain indebted to the brave hearts who gave their today for our tomorrow.
