In a significant effort to combat illegal mining and safeguard the environment, Poonch Police, operating in one of Jammu and Kashmir’s most sensitive border regions, have executed a robust crackdown in March 2025. This extensive operation, which resulted in the seizure of 18 vehicles and the imposition of hefty penalties, is a testament to the unwavering commitment of the district’s law enforcement agencies in ensuring both environmental protection and security.
The operation was led by PSI Anil Sharma of the Border Police Post Ajote, under the vigilant supervision of SSP Poonch Shafqat Hussain JKPS and Additional SP Mohan Sharma. The crackdown not only targeted illegal mining transporters but also scrutinized the operations of a local stone crusher unit, which was found to be operating without the necessary legal compliance. Following a joint operation with the Department of Geology and Mining, a fine of Rs 47,884 was levied on the crusher owner. As per an official statement from the District Mineral Officer, Poonch, vehicles were seized for transporting minerals without valid e-challans, which are required to be issued at the time of mineral dispatch from the unit.
The total fines collected during the operation have amounted to Rs 1.17 lakh, including Rs 69,669 from vehicle operators and Rs 47,884 from the crusher owner. This decisive move is part of a broader strategy to curb illegal mining activities and uphold the rule of law in Poonch.
Strict Enforcement – ‘No Mining Zone’ Flagged in Betar River Belt:
As part of this enforcement drive, the Betar River belt, a frequently exploited region for illegal mining, has now been officially designated as a “No Mining Zone”. Red-flag visual markers have been installed across the area, symbolizing the administration’s zero-tolerance policy towards unauthorized extraction.
