Suspense over PG Course expansion!

Jammu, Aug 22: In a recent decision, the National Medical Commission’s Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MAARB) has disapproved three separate applications submitted by the Principal of Government Medical College (GMC), Jammu, concerning the expansion and initiation of postgraduate (PG) courses for the academic year 2024-25.
As per the letters available with Jammu Jottings, the National Medical Commission, Medical Assessment And Rating Board (MAARB) has disapproved the three different applications in regard to increase intake of 17 seats of PG courses of three streams MD Medicine, MD Paediatrics and MD Biochemistry (fresh). The office of the Principal Government Medical College, Jammu has approached by three different applications to increase and to start fresh PG Course in Biochemistry. The application with ID no NMC/PG/2024-25/000400 dated 31-05-2024 requesting for increase intake of PG Courses MD – Medicine from 13 to 18 seats for academic year 2024-25. The second application with ID no NMC/PG/2024-25/000443 dated 31-05-2024 requesting for increase intake of PG Courses MD – Paediatrics from 14 to 22 seats for academic year 2024-25. The third application with ID no NMC/PG/2024-25/000611 dated 31-05-2024 requesting to start new PG Courses MD – Biochemistry with 04 seats for academic year 2024-25. But the National Medical Commission, Medical Assessment And Rating Board (MAARB) has disapproved the request by sending three different ‘Disapproval Letters’
The remarks written on the disapproval letter for increase intake of PG Course in MD – Medicine from 13 to 18 seats were ‘Committee reviewed the Standard Assessment Form (SAF) and all relevant parameters not found satisfactory so decide to disapprove increase intake of PG Course (13 to 18 seats) in MD – Medicine on dated 30th May 2024.’ The grounds shown for disapproval in this case is as ‘As per AEBAS attendance (=> 75%) from 1st January to 29th Feb 2024, Professor – 03 available, Associate Professor – 02 available, Assistant Professor – 14 available so not eligible for increase intake from 13 to 18.’

The remarks written on the disapproval letter for starting new PG Course MD – Biochemistry are as ‘Committee reviewed the Standard Assessment Form (SAF) and all relevant parameters not found satisfactory so decide to disapprove starting of new PG Course (04 seats) in MD – Biochemistry on dated 30th May 2024.’ The grounds shown for disapproval in this case is are as ‘As per AEBAS attendance (=> 75%) from 1st January to 29th Feb 2024, Professor – Not available, Associate Professor – Not available, Assistant Professor – 05 available.’
The three ‘Disapproval Letters’ were signed by Jitulal Ramparsad Meena, Member/President of the Medical Assessment and Rating Board, National Medical Commission, on June 3, 2024. They were sent via email, but the Principal’s office at GMC Jammu received them with significant delay.
The Principal of GMC Jammu reported that the disapproval letters were received later than expected due to email issues. In response to the disapprovals, the Principal confirmed that an appeal has been filed with the required fee of Rs 50,000 in the three cases. The appeal aims to overturn the MAARB’s decision and secure the requested increases in PG course intake and the new MD – Biochemistry program.
The Principal expressed optimism that the appeal will lead to a favorable outcome and hoped for a swift resolution that would allow GMC Jammu to expand its PG course offerings as proposed.
