How social is social media itself ? This question has been burning people’s minds since the last few years. People have started questioning themselves whether what we are calling social media and even believing that it is really social itself ? Has this media made us social ? Has this media called social media added something constructive to the society? Has this social media brought people closer? Is it true that social media has made our new generation individualistic? Is it also true that this media has increased the distance between people instead of bringing people more closely? People just now by exchanging messages on social media and reacting to the messages of others understand that the social action is complete. Prior to the availability of this so-called social media, people had a habit of meeting and having an interaction with relatives and friends face to face. Even after the arrival of telephones there had been meetings and celebrations not at individual level but at community level. Besides, there were several sources of entertainment, like cinema, theater music and dance programmes, literary programmes and so on, which were witnessed by people along with relatives and friends. But the entry of social media has now overshadowed almost all the sources of entertainment. Not only entertainment but has now become a major source of information and also of education. As far as the issue is related to entertainment, the impact of social media has not been a matter of concern but with regard to information and education this media is now proving to be hazardous not only for the users but also for the whole society and above all for the country. Majority of social media users belong to youngsters and as such any wrong and misleading information being circulated through this media by scruples elements have resulted in some incidents of violence and hatred. It is not really a matter of concern because our young generation is the biggest user of social media and the coming generation of children and adolescents is now outnumbering the other users of social media. This in near future can create various socio-cultural problems which may lead to violence. It is time to address this issue otherwise we may lose the opportunity to make our country a model of ethics and amity for others. We have to accept that this social media has taken away our relatives, relatives and friends from us and if truth be told, they have also taken away. It means to say that this social media is taking away from human beings which are neither good for the society nor for the country.
