Elections and political Scenario of JK

The tempo of political rallies and the visits of political leaders to various places of Jammu and Kashmir is now a clear cut indication that elections are not so far. Though it is not yet possible to tell the exact tentative date of elections to be held in Jammu and Kashmir, it is now not a secret that any time there can be an announcement for holding elections in the Union Territory. Though December is known to be the month of snowfall not only in the high reaches of the UT but also in most of the hilly towns and villages. Apart from the whole valley of Kashmir, four districts of Jammu division, Ramban, Doda, Kishtwar, Poonch and Rajouri are also snow bound areas and most of the parts remain cut from the rest of the UT for weeks and even for longer period during the months of December and January every year. Besides, many parts of Udhampur, Reasi and Kathua districts also experience moderate to heavy snowfall in winters. As such most of the region of Jammu division also remains cut by road from the rest of the country for a quite long period. So in such circumstances holding of elections is neither viable nor feasible and nor will be upto the expectations of people. Because a large chunk of the population will not be in a position to freely and comfortably exercise their right of franchise. Secondly it is not yet clear whether the elections in Jammu and Kashmir will be held after the report of delimitation commission is nbt only submitted but also stands approved by parliament. Moreover, many leaders in the UT have crossed over to other parties and have given a new definition to the word ‘Loyalty.’ Interestingly most of the leaders of the opposition parties have and are planning to join BJP. Why it is so is not less than suspense. Interestingly whosoever joins or is planning to join BJP raises a bogey of indiscrimination with Jammu by the previous governments of Jammu and Kashmir, while majority of them had been a part of those governments and many of them have enjoyed ministerial berths. People know this gimmick and are well aware of such hollow slogans because the party they are joining by raisin such slogans too have been raising these slogans since 1947 but has done nothing even being a partner in the Mufti and Mehbooba governments and during Governor and now Lt. Governor Rule, despite being power in the centre.
