About 5 gates were built on the Tawi River, which served as an entry point and as a border for Jammu. Only through these Gates could people enter the city of Jammu. Out of these five gates, only three are left now that too in a condition where one could find a structure like a Gate. It cannot be said confidently that these three are also in good condition, but it can definitely be said that some of their traces are still left. There was a gate at the eastern end of the city i.e. at the end of the path which goes down to Tawi from Panjtirthi. There is no trace of that Gate left now. Another gate was built on the road leading to Peerkho, some traces of which still testify to its existence. Aside from this gate, an Octroi /Toll-Tax post was also constructed because wood and other goods which were needed by every house in those days were brought to the city by this way, apart from this, the goods of many traders were also brought in this way. Similarly, there was another gate which was called Jogi Gate. This gate was made perhaps for the last possible journey of man. One more gate was built at the place from where today a road leads to Gujjar Nagar, another to the Exhibition Ground, one to Raghunath Bazaar and one to the Gummat ki Dhakki. This gate is slightly below the road and now only a few traces are left of it. It is called Maheshi Gate. All the four sides of this gate have been encroached and the encroachers are now waiting for the remaining part of the gate to fall. There is a gate at Gummat also, which is situated at the top end of the Gummat ki Dhakki. From Gummat Chowk to Sidion, a sequence of steps goes towards the upper end of where this historical Gummat Gate is located of which only a few traces are left now. Most parts of this gate have been illegally occupied by the petty traders, hawkers and street vendors. This gate of Guppat and a long sequence of steps can become a wonderful place of tourist attraction, but maybe no one was interested in this. Whom to blame for the destruction of this legacy, perhaps the people and society, because these priceless treasures of historical heritage are gradually being destroyed, we are the ones who do not raise the voice and show any concern. The same is the condition of our Tawi now. This River gave us everything but what are we giving him in return, is nothing but filth of the whole city?
