Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, which formerly was known as ‘Nirmal Bharat’ is confined to the cleanliness of garbage and construction of toilets. Motive behind the construction of toilets is claimed to make India open defecation free, which was already in practice and the UPA government had drawn a massive plan for that. Most of the people who are above the age of fifty years know well that under Nirmal Bharat Scheme toilets were constructed in lakhs of households across the country. Secondly to meet the problem of toilets at public places “Sulabh Shauchalaya International” and NGO was roped in by the previous government to provide toilet facilities to the people at public places lakhs of ‘Sulabh Shouchalays’ had been constructed across the country much before the year 2014 and are providing service to the people. But his hype was created with the help of the media that there has been no effort in this direction till 2014. Anyhow let it be accepted that the ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ is the first and the only movement in this regard but for the last seven years what has been achieved on ground is nothing but publicity on electronic media. There is nothing substantial proof of any success, achievement or any advancement in this field like the establishment of ‘Sulabh Shouchalays’ which still stands as witness of the sincerity of the then government towards the movement. The present ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ has been confined to the construction of toilets and there is no reference to pollution of any kind. ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ shall be just a propaganda if it is not associated with the pollution, particularly pollution of environment and pollution of water, if not the pollution of air. Because defecation in the open affects not only the environment but water also and even air too. Unless the focus is laid upon to control the environment and water pollution you cannot achieve the target of making the country open defecation free. So instead of utilizing every source on just one point called ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ the thrust should be on making the country pollution free. As such the movement of ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ must be linked with the movement of making India pollution free, may it be of environment or of water or of air.
