MVD cracks down on ‘Pollution Checking Centres’: Warns against overcharging and malpractices

Jammu, Dec 13: In a bid to ensure strict adherence to pollution control norms and curb malpractices, the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) of Jammu, under the guidance of Regional Transport Officer (RTO) Mr Pankaj Bhagotra, conducted a rigorous inspection drive targeting ‘Pollution Checking Centres’ across the district. The operation was part of a special initiative directed by the Transport Commissioner, J&K, Mr Vishesh Mahajan KAS aimed at improving transparency and ensuring compliance with established guidelines.
Led by ARTO (Headquarters) Ms. Rehana Tabassam, multiple teams of officials carried out surprise inspections at various locations, including Miran Sahib, Satwari, Bakshi Nagar, Warehouse, and Akhnoor Road. During inspections several discrepancies, such as the absence of technically qualified operators and the non-display of rate lists at the centres have surfaced. Notices were promptly issued to operators, directing them to rectify these lapses immediately. The department has warned that failure to comply with these directives will result in the online suspension of their operational licenses.
The drive was aimed at identifying irregularities and enforcing strict adherence to pollution-checking standards.
Strict instructions to ensure compliance: Officials emphasized the importance of computerized testing and certification with minimal human interference to maintain authenticity and accuracy. They urged Pollution Checking Centres to strictly adhere to pollution testing norms and ensure their operations meet the required technical standards.
The inspections also focused on verifying key operational aspects, including the availability of pollution testing equipment meeting approved specifications, trained and technically qualified personnel, updated software and computer infrastructure, and proper maintenance contracts and calibration records.
Broader scope of inspections: In addition to Pollution Checking Centres, the MVD team extended its scrutiny to Taxi Aggregators operating in Jammu. Four aggregators were inspected to assess their on-board vehicle availability and the volume of daily rides they conduct. The department assured full cooperation and support to the aggregators, encouraging them to provide cost-effective and seamless services to commuters.
Officials leading the initiative: The inspection teams included experienced Rehana Tabassam (ARTO Headquarters), Vikas Srivats (MVIs), Jagandeep Singh (MVIs), and Tarunjot Singh (MVTA). Speaking on the occasion, the officials reiterated their commitment to enforcing stringent pollution control measures and ensuring a transparent operational framework for all stakeholders.
The department has assured the public that such surprise inspections will continue to ensure accountability, maintain environmental standards, and safeguard commuter interests.
Through these proactive measures, the MVD aims to create a pollution-free environment while fostering fair practices and enhancing the quality of services provided by both Pollution Checking Centres and Taxi Aggregators in Jammu.
