Udhampur, Oct 07: The recently concluded assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir have left their mark across all districts, but Udhampur has emerged as a beacon of democratic engagement, achieving an impressive voter turnout of 75.87%. This remarkable achievement ranks Udhampur as the second highest in the region and is a testament to the tireless efforts of District Election Officer (DEO) Ms. Saloni Rai, IAS, and her dedicated team.
In the broader context, the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir recorded an overall voter turnout of 63.45%, while the Jammu province itself achieved a commendable 72.59%. Udhampur’s outstanding performance not only surpasses these averages but also highlights the district’s commitment to civic participation.
Udhampur district encompasses four assembly constituencies: Udhampur West, Udhampur East, Chenani, and Ramnagar, with a total of 654 polling booths strategically located throughout the region. Among these constituencies, Udhampur East led the charge with a remarkable 77% voter turnout, closely followed by Udhampur West at 76.92%. Chenani also performed admirably with a 76.82% turnout, while Ramnagar recorded 72.35%.
The success of the election process in Udhampur can be attributed to the relentless dedication and innovative strategies implemented by Ms. Saloni Rai and her team. Working alongside Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Udhampur, they focused on motivating voters and ensuring that every eligible citizen had the opportunity to cast their ballot. Despite the challenging topography of the district, which includes eight tehsils-Udhampur, Chenani, Basantgarh, Ramnagar, Latti, Moungri, Panchari, and Majalta-Ms. Rai’s team persevered, demonstrating exceptional commitment to achieving maximum voter turnout.
Udhampur is characterized by its diverse landscape, comprising four subdivisions-Dudu, Basantgarh, Chenani, and Ramnagar-and is home to four towns: Udhampur, Ramnagar, Chenani, and Kud. The district features 357 villages, 204 panchayats, two municipal committees, and one municipal council, all of which were mobilized for this critical democratic exercise.
The achievements of Udhampur in the assembly elections not only reflect the hard work of its administration but also underscore the spirit of civic engagement among its residents. As the dust settles on the elections, the focus now shifts to maintaining this momentum of participation in future democratic processes, ensuring that the voices of the people continue to be heard loud and clear.
With the commitment shown by the district leadership and the active participation of the community, Udhampur sets a commendable example for other districts in Jammu and Kashmir, paving the way for a more engaged and responsive democratic landscape.
