Sentenced to One-Year Imprisonment and `15 Lakh Fine for Possessing Disproportionate Assets

Srinagar, Aug 20: In a significant judgment reaffirming the commitment to fight corruption, the Hon’ble Additional Special Judge, Anti-Corruption Court Srinagar, Shri Faizan-ul-Haq Iqbal, has convicted Habibul Hassan Beigh, a retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer and former Member of the Special Tribunal, J&K Government.
The conviction relates to FIR No. 22/1997, originally registered on April 24, 1997 by the then Vigilance Organisation Kashmir (now Anti-Corruption Bureau, Srinagar), based on credible allegations that the officer had acquired assets grossly disproportionate to his known sources of income during his tenure in public service.
The accused, S/o Gh. Hassan Beigh, R/o Chinar Colony, Barzulla, Srinagar, has been sentenced to one year of imprisonment and imposed a fine of ?15 lakh under Sections 5(1)(e) and 5(2) of the J&K Prevention of Corruption Act, 2006, read with Sections 12 and 14 of the J&K Public Men and Public Servants Declaration of Assets and Other Provisions Act, 1983.
After a detailed investigation supported by oral and documentary evidence, a chargesheet was filed on November 13, 2000, and the matter proceeded to trial. Upon conclusion, the court found the accused guilty of criminal misconduct and illegal accumulation of wealth.
The prosecution in the case was effectively conducted by Senior Prosecuting Officer Shri Wajahat Jameel, representing the Anti-Corruption Bureau, Srinagar.
