Iltija Mufti criticizes administration over Kathua killings, selective restrictions on opposition leaders

Srinagar, Mar 10: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti has harshly condemned the administration over the recent killings of three civilians in Kathua district, as well as the alleged selective restrictions imposed on opposition leaders.
Speaking to the media, Iltija expressed her dissatisfaction with the authorities’ actions, accusing them of preventing her from visiting the families of the victims in Billawar while allowing BJP leaders free access. “I had intended to visit Billawar to offer my condolences to the families of the three civilians who were killed, but the police stopped me. In contrast, BJP leaders such as Sunil Sharma faced no such restrictions. Why this clear double standard?” she questioned.
The three victims-Yogesh (32), Darshan (40), and Varun (14), reportedly cousins-were tragically found dead in the Inchhu forests of Kathua’s Malhar area on Saturday evening. While a police officer confirmed the identities of the victims, further details were not disclosed.
Iltija also voiced her concerns about the deteriorating law and order situation in Kathua, highlighting a growing number of youth being detained under stringent laws. “The atmosphere in Kathua is becoming increasingly tense, with rising communal tensions. Young boys are being arrested under the Public Safety Act (PSA) and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Who is responsible for maintaining law and order in Kathua and Billawar?” she demanded.
Calling for an immediate and thorough investigation into the killings, she urged the Lieutenant Governor and the Director General of Police to take swift action. “I appeal to the Lieutenant Governor and DGP to ensure a fair and swift inquiry into this matter. We were even stopped from meeting the family of the 14-year-old victim in Billawar,” she said.
Further criticizing the administration, Iltija took aim at the controversy surrounding the Gulmarg fashion show. She questioned how such an event could take place without proper oversight, especially when tourism falls under the Chief Minister’s purview. “How was this allowed to happen? Was the Chief Minister unaware? There are even reports of open alcohol consumption at the event,” she alleged.
Iltija did not hold back in her criticism of the previous National Conference-led government, accusing them of gross negligence. “All of this is happening right under their nose. How can they claim ignorance of these matters?” she added, demanding accountability from the authorities.
