Traffic Lights a Joke?

On the roads of Jammu city traffic managing automated lights were installed a few years back with a motive of streamlining the flow of ever increasing load of traffic. Prior to this these lights have been installed twice in Jammu city but both the times these lights failed to provide any help in controlling the traffic. Now once again, these lights installed a third time on the city roads are proving to be ineffective at most of the junctions. There are various reasons behind this ineffectiveness. At most of the junctions either the lights are not functioning properly or these are not being taken seriously by the drivers. Secondly the timings set for the movement of the traffic is nor in accordance with the load of the traffic. It seems that no proper study has been undertaken about the load of the traffic at each junction and also the timings had not been set accordingly. This has resulted in long queues of vehicles on one road while on the other most of the time the road is either clear or hardly few vehicles are there to cross the junction. Similarly at several junctions, the roads connected with are single lane roads as such there is no scope for left or right turn and the vehicles intending to take turn to either side have no option but to stop there without any reason. As such these traffic lights have now become a joke for the drivers and transporters. This has resulted in jumping the red light at most of the junctions. Most of the drivers jump over the red light even at the time when there is movement of traffic from the side with green signal. These violations are the result of above mentioned reasons. However there are violators also who are habitual of breaking the laws. Above all for the increase in the cases of jumping over red traffic lights, is absence of action against such violators. Hardly one will find any traffic police taking immediate action against those who jump over the traffic lights. Drivers very proudly, or may be sometimes for any other reason jump over the traffic signal because they are hundred percent sure that there will be no traffic man across the junction to check these violations and issue a challan or impose any fine. If the concerned agencies want to take optimum benefits of the installed traffic light then there must be a mechanism to check the violators and take immediate action against them under proper law, otherwise these traffic lights will soon become a joke in Jammu.
